The Cubs are looking solid in many areas. Just for fun, what is the area of greatest need right now?

You can pick a general area in the poll, but feel free to list a specific position on your comments. Conside that position's offense and defense in your assessment.

I am currently most concerned with middle relief.

Second would be starting pitching. Starters 4 and 5 are not a strength for the club.

Not too much to complain about though, which makes this an intriguing thought to ponder. Rather than try to shake things up, I hope Lou stays with the winning formula and doesn't mess with it too much.

I think it obviously comes down to SP and MR.

At SU and CL, we have Marmol and Wood.  We're good there.

Infield, we have Lee, Ramirez, and a slew of guys to play the middle infield.

Same with outfield.  A couple of stars and a slew of guys to play center.

Catcher, we're good with Soto.

Great at depth and pinch hitters with Ward, Fontenot, Reed Johnson/Jim Edmonds (Wow, never thought I'd compliment Jim Edmonds with no regrets).

Especially from playoffs perspective, I totally agree about pitching. Pitching tends to win in the playoffs and we wont be scoring as many runs in the postseason going against the other teams' 1-2-3 pitchers. So far Zambrano-Dempster-Lilly have looked solid but that could change in a heartbeat so another solid SP and some help in middle relief would solidify Cubs pitching staff.

I gotta go with starting pitching. I really like the top 3, but get a little nervous toward the back end. However they do have the offense to make mediocre pitchers look better than they are.

With three solid starters, the Cubs should be set up going into the playoffs, especially if they can somehow wrap up the division with a week left in the season. Get your 1-2-3 starters rested and queued up for the first series.

The playoffs are where middle relief is most important. You can hide your 4-5 starters, but your middle relief is going to be in the line of fire against some good lineups. A good middle relief squad can get you to the 9th inning. Then Lou can choose Marmol or Wood to close depending on the situation. This will save their arms for a deep playoff run.

The one spot where you can clearly make an upgrade is in the starting rotation, particularly those last 2 spots.

However, I don't think that is the Cubs biggest weakness. The biggest weakness is that the lineup is full of good hitters who are also streaky hitters. When they are all on, the lineup is very, very good. But when a couple of those guys are in a slump, the lineup is vulnerable and has a tough time scoring.
