Dayn Perry of Foxsports.com has written an article stating that the Cubs will fizzle out later in the season. The reasons being, the Cubs starting pitching will faulter, Carlos Marmol will be over used (because he is on pace to pitch 104 innings) and hot young players like Geo Soto will not continue his offensive out put.
Id paste the link to the article but unfortunately im using a PS3 to create this thread and im unable to. So simply go to Foxsports.com home page and read it for yourself.
lets hear what you all think of it.

I am both angry and disgusted by this article. Why? Well first off he has to bring up the 100 year drought. Wow, really Dayn, you dont say, Its been that long! But what really gets me is that he shows stats explaining why the Cubs have been so good only to go on to say that those numbers wont continue. Come on now Dayn, is it so hard to think that the Cubs might be able to maintain this type of play all season, and that they have a legitimate shot at post season success.

Cubs">Dayn Perry's Article
Just one man's opinion, the Cubs fans across the world might just have the last laugh at the expense of all the naysayers, gloom and doom prognosticators..

He's right.
The Cubs won't keep up this level of play all season. They are averaging close to 6 runs a game, that won't continue all season.
The starting pitching has been mediocre this season. Lots of production out of Z and Dempster, but Lilly took a while to get going, Hill has been sent to AAA and Marquis isn't the Marquis of April and May's past. There is definitely room for improvement.
That said, the Cubs don't have to continue this pace of play to get to October. All they have to do is win more games than the Reds, Cardinals, Brewers, Astros, and Pirates.
The Pirates and Reds are an afterthought.
The Brewers have injury concerns of their own, and pitchers are making adjustments on these young sluggers they have, and those sluggers have not responded (Braun notwithstanding)
The Cardinals have been playing out of their minds. Pujols is the only guy in that lineup who scares me. The pitching has been good, but can it last all season?
The Astros are old, Berkman is hitting close to .400 (which I would bet my next years salary he doesn't end up within 50 points of come September) and Oswalt has injury concerns of his own right.
I like our chances.

Why are you getting so upset about what one writer thinks? It is his opinion and have you ever read any of his articles before?? He is kind of a hack and he rarely ever has anything interesting to say. Who cares if a million journalists write off the Cubs?? All that matters is what happens on the field.

I could care a less what this guy or any other sports writers say if they have something good to say great I will read it, if they have something bad to say I will read but probably not take the stock in it. It is just one man's opinion and the 100 year thing is a very weak and overused argument.
Ok maybe he has some points but I think he is way off. Marmol is a horse I have said it time and time again I think Marmol is the horse that Zambrano is if not better innings pitched will not effect him.
And if he thinks Soto is going to cool way off he has another thing coming. Soto is going to have a great long career with the Cubs in my opinion.

It's a pretty poorly written article. Of course they won't keep scoring runs like they have been all year, but when the Cubs are one game back of the best record in the majors, you're sure to see this type of article rather than one singing their praises. Kind of read like it Perry was having a hard time meeting his deadline, and then he remembered the dog that everyone likes to kick.

Look in '89 everyone (including me) thought the Cubs would stink. As they got hot and kept winning everyone predicted doom. If you look at all the teams in the Central, the Cubs have the most complete team. That doesn't mean they'll win the division, but it does mean that if everything is equal, the Cubs should have the best chance. B | |
