CLEARWATER, Fla. – West Virginia baseball freshman Jedd Gyorko has been named the 2008 BIG EAST Rookie Of The Year at the BIG EAST Baseball Championship opening ceremonies, tonight, at Bright House Field in Clearwater, Fla. Four other Mountaineers were honored by the league. The awards are voted on by the league’s 12 head baseball coaches.
The second baseman hit .411 with seven home runs and 57 RBIs. He finished the regular season ranked third in the BIG EAST in batting. He is second in the league with 90 hits, fifth in RBIs and total bases (133), sixth in slugging (.607) and eighth in on-base percentage (.453). Gyorko is the second West Virginia player to be named BIG EAST Rookie of the Year, joining Stan Poslusny, who won the award in 2003.
Gyorko was also named to the BIG EAST second team along with outfielder Justin Parks.
