So our defense with 5 starters over 30 is getting "old"?

Steelers defensive starters over 30...

James Farrior

Casey Hampton

Deshea Townsend

James Harrison

Aaaron Smith

Dont let the door hit you on the ass on the way out.

Ravens baby. All day.

People call our defense old because our 30+ players happen to be our big names- Lewis, McAlister, Pryce, etc.  Not to give anyone excuses though, I too get annoyed by the "aging defense" bit.  And it's not just the Steelers fans, it's the majority of football fans outside of Maryland.

Most of the assumptions probably come from outsiders who first look at the Ravens and say that the team is based solely on defense.  (ok, that point is noted and valid.)

Then they look at the Ravens record which was very bad last year.

Then they see the amount of points scored and points allowed by the Ravens which really was pretty high for them last year.

They take a peek at the roster names and see a pro-bowl filled defense, so talent cannot be the issue, and they then assume that it is the defenders' ages which are the problem.

Since these outsiders have never watched a Ravens game outside of a nationally televised one, that is the best thought process that they can come up with, but in reality, the Ravens offense and special teams severely hurt the team last year in giving up turnovers inside the Ravens 20 or just flat out giving up points without the defense even being on the field.

When you give the ball up inside your own 20, the opposing offense is already set up for an easy 3 points through no fault of the defense.  Even with a 3 down stop, it is almost automatic that the defense will be penalized 3 points against their stats in the end.

dude-

every team with a good defense has key players over 30, cept maybe the Chargers.  it is inevitable that you need good veterans to have a top 10 defense.  So maybe the Ravens have 5 players over 30, and most good teams have 3-4.  So our defenses avg age is maybe a year over the league average, pittsburgh's avg age is a year higher than ours.

That said, Ray has looked better the past 2 years then he did in 2003-2005, and reportadly he is in even better shape now.  C-mac is barely over 30 and has a good 4 years left.  The only onese worth worrying about are Pryce, who besides last years fluke injury (broken hand, not related to old age) has been healthy for years, and rolle, who has lost a step, but we have his replacement in the wings now.  Gregg is over 30, but does not have so much wear and tear from when he was younger.  So nothing to worry about.

as bad as we were last year, we still had the number 6 defense in the league.

To piggy-back off what someone else says, the people that talk about Baltimore having an old defense have only seen the primetime games from the year before.  The seen the Steelers game when McAlister and Rolle were not playing (30+ points in a half), and the Colts game, another bad defensive game.  Nobody really pays attention to offensive turnovers for a team that they don't follow, they just see how many points the team gave up and attribute it all to the defense.
