Expect these NFL teams to miss the playoffs again
Given the annual turnover in the 12-team playoff field, I tried last week to make an educated prediction (i.e., wild guess) at which six postseason squads from 2007 will miss the bus in ‘08. The six pegged to be knocked down a peg or two in the coming season are the Pittsburgh Steelers, Tennessee Titans, Washington Redskins, Green Bay Packers, Seattle Seahawks and New York Giants.
So with a half-dozen seats expected to be empty, the next job is to figure out which six non-playoff teams from 2007 will qualify for the Super Bowl tournament. Before that, let’s consider six non-playoff teams from last season that will remain non-playoff teams this time around:
The teams predicted to miss the play offs were:
1) New York Jets
2) Kansas City Chiefs
3) Cleveland Browns
4) Detriot Lions
5) Arizona Cardinals
6) Carolina Panthers
Here is what was said about the chiefs:
3. Kansas City Chiefs
On the surface, the addition of the Chiefs to this list is a no-brainer. The franchise is in obvious rebuilding mode, and coach Herm Edwards expects nine of the team’s 12 draft picks to suit up on Sundays this fall.
But I’ve added them because some Kansas City fans don’t seem to realize that the team is closer to the bottom than the top. Indeed, there’s a strange sense of swagger that comes from a franchise that, in reality, has nothing to swagger about.
Though confidence is a good thing, it needs a strong foundation. The Chiefs don’t have it, and thus the confidence from guys like Edwards and GM Carl Peterson is more accurately described as hubris.
Come January, that hubris could be replaced by unemployment.
I guees us fans need a reality check!

He may be right, may be wrong. Every year there is a team or two that are supposed to suck, and all the so-called experts agree. We are going to improve this year, how can't we? I think alot depends on Croyle. He is the wild card. I think we have gotten stronger at almost every position, but we are going to be real young. We may not make the playoffs, but I bet we at least threaten to.

I absolutely agree. Impossible to tell who will make it, and who won't until the season gets underway.
Just this year in the NHL, my Montreal Canadiens were picked to finish 13th out of 15 teams in the Eastern conference and miss the playoffs. They ended up finishing in first, so what do the "experts" really know?

I'm of the opinion that KC will miss the playoffs this....too many question marks and too much youth. I'm not saying that they wont, because in the NFL you just never know....but I think it's a stretch to think that they will make it.
Having said that, I think that there will be a lot of improvement on both sides of the ball and special teams this season (that's probably an understatement, how could it get worse!) After one more good draft the Chiefs may only be a player or two away from being a serious title contender.

I hate when sportswriters speak on behalf of "the fans." What fans? Who did you talk to? Your buddy in the next cubicle? Is he the voice of the entire fan base now?
Almost every fan I've spoken with has the same general opinion as most of us do. Excited optimism, but we're far from confident that this team will make the play offs. Anyone who truely follows this team (and not just write about it) knows that there are too many question marks scattered around the entire team. How cocky can we really be when even the Chiefs faithful aren't sure what we have?
Is Brodie Croyle going to improve or will he sink us with INTs? Is the O-line good enough? Or at least better? Can our corners step it up and cover better than last year? Will Tamba Hali make up for the disappearing Allen? Can Glenn Dorsey help us improve a leaky run defense? Can our young safeties step it up? Is LJ truely recovered or will there be lingering effects of his injury? Who is going to be our 2nd WR and can they be a threat opposite Bowe? Is the addition of Chan Gailey and a new offensive scheme enough to improve one of the worst offenses from last season?
The list goes on and on of questions that are short on answers right now. I don't know any Chiefs fans who are that confident that all these questions have positive answers. We're just hoping there's more positive than negative at this point. Play offs? Pleasant suprise if it happens, but I'm not counting on it just yet.

You better believe you need a reality check. I just don't understand why it is so hard to admit as a fan that your team sucks. I love the Chiefs but they suck! The O-line is a HUGE problem, Croyle is the starter(whatever)?, LJ will not play the entire year(I promise), and see what football | |
