time for the legend to bow out,taken too much punishment and he should be remembered  for the great fighter he was who brought the UFC to a whole new level,Matt is one of the all time greats and a gentleman and it is just not right watching him getting beaten up by the next generation,so hang them up Matt

I agree.  Hughes is one of my all time favorites.  He should hang-em up before he gets himself hurt.  He is an MMA legend, and will be remembered as such, but after 50 fights he just can't hang with the young fighters in his weight class.  Hopefully Dana will set it up so he can fight Serra and retire.

i think that is the only fight left for Matt and it would be great to see him go out a winner not being bloodied and battered by guys far inferior to him

I agree that Hughes needs to retire after the fight with Serra...Hughes has not been the same fighter every since he lost to GSP the first time....I should in his fight with Lytle a guy that he should have finished...Then he fought GSP again and look like he didn't know what he was doing....I will give this that he did put up some what of a fight with Alves but I think it came down that the younger stronger fight was to much for the vet...I am not a big fan of Hughes and I hope he loses to Serra....

Matt should fight Serra by the end of the year, which Matt will win. Then fight after fight, be installed in the UFC "Hall of Fame". Great fighter, great champion.

Just to start; I like Matt Hughes in spite of some aspects of his personality, and think he is one of the best fighters ever.

But;

I think folks need to remember that Hughes is only 34. You guys are talking about him like he is in his 40's. There are a whole bunch of fighters in their mid-to-late 30's that are still fighting with varying degrees of success. Shoot, there's guys on TUF in their 30's just trying to BREAK IN to the MMA game.

Hughes has fought more than the average fighter. But if you check into a lot of other fighters that are 28+, if they haven't make the UFC yet, they also have 30+ fights. Nate Marquart would be only one example.

SO, I don't think that Hughes has any reason to quit due to age (tons of fighters older than him), and I don't think he has any reason to quit due to # of fights (Evan Tanner, Jeremy Horn, Wanderlie Silva and soooo many more). If Hughes wants to quit and retire the reason is that he doesn't feel that he can ADAPT to the sport in it's current state. He clearly knows how to train in endurance, strength, wrestling, and some other skills; He could train harder on other aspects to adapt to the current competition. I wish he would.

Age? No way
Wear and Tear? No way
Stubbornness to change fighting style? Maybe a little
Not wanting to tarnish his record? 99%

Remembered as a great fighter, but not a gentleman.  He couldn't be further from that.  I think he will fight Serra near year's end and will destroy him (unfortunately).  He will take a break, maybe even announce his retirement after the Serra victory, but he will come back.  Guys like him at his age can't stay away.  Especially since he is such an arrogant a-hole.  Hard to keep those guys away.
