We have all had time to let last year's disappointing season settle - although it felt like the morning after a night of heavy drinking and eating bad Mexican food.  How did the Cardinals fall so far so fast?  We all know it was the defense, but why?  How much is Kragthorpe's fault?  What about Cassady?  What about Petrino?  How is it possible that the Cards went from being a Big East/Orange Bowl Champion to a laughing stock in only one season.  We didn't lose that many seniors from that championship winning team.  The offense was probably even a little better!  The defense went from above average to one of the worst defenses I have ever seen.  Your thoughs......

i noticed that we never had any pressure on the qb from the d line.  we also never blitzed.  i don't know if that's because of kragthorpe or not but it definitely helped the other teams passing games.  you give a qb 10 seconds and i don't care who he is, he'll find somebody open.  i also think our secondary just wasn't good enough to play tight man so there was always a cushion and they seemed to be confused on their assignments all season long.

These are all questions that almost every Card fan has probably been asking themselves.  I don't even know where to point fingers @ for last year, and I'm not even going to try.  It's over and done with (thank God b/c it was painful).

As far as the defense goes, I think it was kinda like cause and effect with the dline and corners.  D-line didn't pressure/rush qb to dump off a pass into coverage.  That gave receivers time to break coverage (sadly) and make themselves open.  There was also the lack of fundamentals.  It seemed like they forgot how to tackle or something in the offseason.  Too many attempts at arm tackles and not enough wrapping a fool up.  I think we'll be in better shape this year however.

I agree with the lack of quarterback pressure and I obviously agree with the secondary.  Would these breakdowns have happened if Petrino never left?  Cassady seemed to be doing a descent job since becoming a Cardinal, why the drop-off.  I don't think we had major changes in personnel at those positions.  When you think back to just the KY game and how in the world a reciever can get that open with that little time on the clock and everyone in the nation knowing the only way we could get beat was by something deep.

The buck stops with the head coach.  No discipline was instilled and no intensity or motivation was given to the team.  No one respected Krag to the point where it showed in their efforts (look at Urrutia's performance all last season...he hated Krag).  You don't get paid to be a head football coach to be a nice guy.  You get paid to push you team to the limits of their capabilities and to do that you are often unliked... but you ARE respected.  I believe there were issues with coordinators as well, but the bottom line is, Krag has to take what's broken and fix it.  Not two seasons from now not this season but when it was happening last season and he failed to do that.  We looked like afraid boys trying to tackle.  That is a sign of weak practices, no intensity and no discipline.  That's why we played poorly on defense.  As far as the offense goes... pitiful play calling.  One dimensional.  No running game.  That all points to inexperience and the inability to compete against opponent play calling in a BCS conference.  NEVER HIRE YOUR FRIENDS!  Ahem  Jurich.

My opinion only.  First three games this season is Krags last chance.

That may be so but he really got screwed over getting stuck with such a god awful defensive line. Those guys single hanidly ruined the team. We did blitz ALOT i dont know why someone would say we didn't. Yeah it was probably because we never got to the quarterback when we did. Corners aren't amazing but i bet if the quarter back didn't have 5-6 sec and allowed to step into to every throw, they probably would have been dirty. When  you know you gott to score at least 40 points to stay in a game it messes up your play calling.

The run play calling was certinly not very good, but we still avraged over 35 points a game and that was without urrutia. His big problem is no imagination with trick plays, i never see them. BUT he has balls. I know it didn't work out for him everytime but he went for it on 4th down an i like that. Also he's keeping out program clean from troublemakers like URRUTIA. You bench your biggest weapon and see how you do. Also us fans were absolutly horrible to him. we only made things worse.

This year the birds will fly high, cantwell is a god and he's been the man
