I watched Tiger Woods today and there is no doubt in my mind: Woods is better and more dominant in his sport than any other athlete has ever been in any sport. It is simply unreal. The shots that he made today, the eagle on 13, the birdie chip and then the eagle on 18, are impossible for anyone except Woods. The stunning regularity he makes them with eliminates any discussion of whether or not he gets lucky sometimes. Please tell me someone who has been more dominant in any sport than Tiger Woods.
It is ridiculous to think about the media who cast Phil Mickelson and others as rivals to Woods. Woods has no rival, and he is simply on a different platform, a different tier, than any other player who picks up a golf club. We will likely never see an athlete dominate the way he has for the rest of our lifetimes. Golf is such a strange sport. If a golfer wins a major tournament, and then another non-major tournament, his name stays around as one of the best for a few years, and more so if he backs it up with hig finishes (just look at Mickelson, Vijay Singh...). Woods is the only golfer on the planet capable of putting together winning streaks, and he will soon have the most career tournament wins and most career major wins.
Everyone knows that Woods is the best golfer, there is no dispute there. But it is a shame that Woods is not heralded more cross-sports. Golf is not my favorite sport, it is likely third behind baseball and football, but we simply cannot fathom any player or team being as good as Woods is. Woods' equvilent would be if a baseball player hit for the triple crown in back-to-back seasons, while leading his team to multiple pennants, and several MVP awards. Or it would be a football team that wins several (more than 3) Super Bowls in a row, and breaks records for both offense and defense. Remember that Woods is dominant all across the board.
It is just mind-blowing being able to watch an athlete of this calibler. To paraphrase the words of Bob Costas today, we watch him sink 35+ foot eagle putts and know that he can also bench 350-400 pounds. Incredible.
