I watched Tiger Woods today and there is no doubt in my mind: Woods is better and more dominant in his sport than any other athlete has ever been in any sport. It is simply unreal. The shots that he made today, the eagle on 13, the birdie chip and then the eagle on 18, are impossible for anyone except Woods. The stunning regularity he makes them with eliminates any discussion of whether or not he gets lucky sometimes. Please tell me someone who has been more dominant in any sport than Tiger Woods.

It is ridiculous to think about the media who cast Phil Mickelson and others as rivals to Woods. Woods has no rival, and he is simply on a different platform, a different tier, than any other player who picks up a golf club. We will likely never see an athlete dominate the way he has for the rest of our lifetimes. Golf is such a strange sport. If a golfer wins a major tournament, and then another non-major tournament, his name stays around as one of the best for a few years, and more so if he backs it up with hig finishes (just look at Mickelson, Vijay Singh...). Woods is the only golfer on the planet capable of putting together winning streaks, and he will soon have the most career tournament wins and most career major wins.

Everyone knows that Woods is the best golfer, there is no dispute there. But it is a shame that Woods is not heralded more cross-sports. Golf is not my favorite sport, it is likely third behind baseball and football, but we simply cannot fathom any player or team being as good as Woods is. Woods' equvilent would be if a baseball player hit for the triple crown in back-to-back seasons, while leading his team to multiple pennants, and several MVP awards. Or it would be a football team that wins several (more than 3) Super Bowls in a row, and breaks records for both offense and defense. Remember that Woods is dominant all across the board.

It is just mind-blowing being able to watch an athlete of this calibler. To paraphrase the words of Bob Costas today, we watch him sink 35+ foot eagle putts and know that he can also bench 350-400 pounds. Incredible.

The difference between Mickelson and Woods: Could you ever imagine Woods shooting that 9 Mickelson made today? And in the way that he did it? Not possible! But with Mickelson, you come to expect that sort of thing. And then for Mickelson afterwards to go into his usual spin doctor mode and tell us he's enjoyed the Open and he'll just go out tomorrow and enjoy a quiet round of golf... well any other player would be throwing up on his shoes after that disgraceful performance.

Tiger Woods is like no other. This guy is truly a remarkable athlete and when he is on top of his game not only can nobody beat him, but nobody even has a chance. This guy has an injured knee, hasn't been in a tournament for a while, has started each day off very slowly, and is STILL winning the Open.

Everybody else is just playing for second.

I have to ditto all comments so far.  The greatest ever.  While I'm not certain we can say he is the greatest athlete ever, he ranks up there.  I think him, Jordan and Ali are the best ever but they its hard to say because their sports are so different.  Regardless, that was one of the most memorable major rounds I've ever seen.

I know that the M.J. comparison is tired but he and Tiger are in a club by themselves in my lifetime (born in '71).  They both have had an uncanny ability to be at their best on the biggest stage and when the pressure is at its greatest.  The most impressive thing to me about them is that this is not a trait that came in the prime of their career, but something that they had at a very early age.  Michael made the game winning shot in the NCAA tourney as a freshman and we all remember the ridiculous comebacks by Tiger in the U.S. amateur.  They were just born "clutch" and that back nine today was amazing to watch.

A sport has to have competition and Woods has none which tells you how pitiful golf truly is. The fact Woods has not broken the streak for most tourney's won just shows he has choked off and on.

I can tell you what the media will say before it's said.  If Woods wins tomorrow it's the greatest performance ever and am sure Tiger will milk the injury to where his caddie will have to carry him down the 18th while he's up by 3 or 4 strokes.  If he loses then it's because of the knee. Plain and simple.  So, I guess his knee has always kept him from winning every tournament he's ever played.

Let's not compare Tiger being more dominant in his sport than any other has been in theirs.  Bill Russell is the greatest basketball player ever and he won 11 titles. Not one single player was with him the way Pippen was with Jordan for his entire career.   Anyway, I'd love to refute you by saying Roger Federer has been more dominant in his sport than Tiger has his.   I bring up first and foremost that Federer has won 5....yes 5 straight Wimbledon titles. The only one he hasn't won is the French which is a very unusual and unorthodox surface.  Very slow to be exact.  Fed has also proven he can beat his games top players such as Nadal and Djokovic en route to closing in on Sampras all time majors mark just like Tiger is closing in on Jack's in golf.   Woods even said Fed's streak is unreal!   It would be the equivalent of Woods winning 5 Masters.  Hasn't and probably never will happen.

Federer also beats his sports best whereas Woods can lose to players like Trevor Immelman in a big major and also other players who aren't even Top 20 for cryin' out loud.  Where are Phil Chokelson, Ernie Els, Jim Furyk, etc....???? Woods is the only guy either winning the tourney's he plays in or is damn close.   Plus, Federer plays in a physically demanding sport like tennis which involves true athleticism.  Nope you can't drink your beer and smoke your ciggies like you can in golf as what the majority of players across the world do....mostly casual players, of course.

America would love nothing more than to have their own Andy Roddick do all Federer has done so they could feature he and Woods in every commercial conceivable.  If Fed was in golf and done all Tiger has sone and Tiger in tennis and done all Fed has....the comparisons to Arthur Ashe would be endless for Woods. Tennis would be the best thing going today since America would be hyping up their own.  Fed if he were in golf with all  those majors would be just another dominating white golfer. Period.  America will not hype some Swiss guy, either.

Federer is classier than Woods too.   Tiger is always slamming his club in the ground on bad shots and even mouths profane language often.  Heck, Fed is in a sport where your adrenaline is going crazy running after all those pts. in the 100 degree heat.  Fed's demeanor a lot like Chris Evert Lloyd.   Again, Federer is in a much more physically demanding sport and has to combat a guy hitting a ball back at him 100 mph......the golf ball don't hit back.   These top golfers play the golf course....not Tiger.
