OK. We've seen Mike Aviles for about a week now, and he's looked impressive to say the least. If I remember correctly, he already has 2 homers, 1 triple, and like 8 doubles. Plus he's hitting .361. Will he continue to play this way? We can probably expect at least a little tapering off on the average, but can he keep up the power numbers? What are your thoughts and predictions?
Well judging from his body of work in the minors which spans about 5 1/2 seasons Aviles has always been a decent hitter. His career minor league average is .297 and in his 2 1/2 years in AAA Omaha he's been hitting .291. His power numbers have been decent over the past 4 years and this year his power numbers appear to be peaking. He's 27 and that is the age where many professional hitters usually start realizing their potential. I have enough confidence in him that I dropped JJ Hardy from my fantasy team and picked up Aviles.
It's not uncommon for a player to come to the majors and have early success due to the high number of fastballs they will see and the fact that most pitchers won't have much of a book on him. Then the second or third time the team sees him they make adjustments and his numbers slide. There is no doubt he will struggle at times and I seriously doubt he will finsih the season above .330 but if he hits .275 with 10 HRs this season he will be in the top half of most productive hitters in our lineup. The amazing thing is his defesne is not much of a dropoff from Pena at all. Aviles' first errror would've been played by just about every first basemen in the league besides Mark Teahan.
In my opinion the SS search is over for now. Now we need to demote one of the extra middle infielders we have and bring Billy Butler back up. In 60 ABs in Omaha he has 3 HRs, 10 RBI and a .383 BA, he has answered the wakeup call.
Aviles with 4 hits yesterday - that's a month's work for TPJ :)
Kid can hit - and he's average in the field - I say leave him in there. In fact - keep hitting him second behind DeJesus. I'd drop Grudz to the 9 spot and hit Gathright 8th - two sets of 1-2 hitters in the lineup.
Encouraging signs - you think Hochevar appreciated that outburst yesterday - when he received 11 runs in his last 7 starts combined?
Angel Berroa looked like the real deal when he was rookie of the year. I am going to temper expectations based on this early success. I would be nice to see this guy stick, but it is hardly soon enough to be jumping to conclusions. It would only lead to frustrations later if I was wrong.
One thing that does bother me about Aviles' approach at the plate is that I think he stands too far from the plate. I think he's vulnerable to pitches on the outside corner of the plate. Off speed pitches on the outer half is probably his soft spot.
