13. According to the NFL rules, teams are allowed to tape "coaching video" from an upper level location or from the end zones with no restrictions so long as both teams have access to the location. Such taping does not require league permission. No one seems to know exactly what "coaching video" is, that there is any review or monitoring of what gets taped, and the NFL doesn't make it's official rule book public.
But this rule seems to be a direct contradiction of the following "rules":
Page 105 of the Game Operations manual says: "No video recording devices of any kind are permitted to be in use in the coaches' booth, on the field, or in the locker room during the game." It later says: "All video shooting locations must be enclosed on all sides with a roof overhead."
And, a memo from Ray Anderson, NFL head of football operations, to head coaches and GMs on Sept. 6, 2006 said: "Video taping of any type, including but not limited to taping of an opponent’s offensive or defensive signals, is prohibited on the sidelines, in the coaches’ booth, in the locker room, or at any other locations accessible to club staff members during the game."
The first rule states that video taping is allowed from an upper level location to make "coaching video", but the other 2 say that video taping is not allowed in "areas accessible to staff members."
Also note that rule regarding taping that the Pats were disciplined for in this year was also in place at the time the Jets were caught taping at Foxboro. The Pats were investigated and penalized, the Jets were not.
None of these things justify or excuse the Pats for violating a rule, but the Haters and the league are not doing the same thing to other teams

Sign stealing is legal in the NFL! It's perfectly permissible. Coaches, players, interested fans, television watchers, and anyone else among the thousands of folks observing an NFL game can study the histrionics of the coaches, note the defensive alignment, and steal the signs. No rule prohibits this. I'd be disappointed in a team if it didn't at least try to steal the signs: the field is only about fifty yards wide. If some assistant coach notices that, every time the opposing team's defensive coordinator waves his hands in the air the linebackers blitz, then I'd expect him to call the blitz out to the offense the next time he sees the sign. Again, no rule prohibits this. I'm sure attempted sign-stealing has been going on for as long as signs have been given.
Existing rules entitle scouts to press box seats for games involving their teams' next two opponents. Scouts monitor hand signals for information that could help their coaching staffs during games, but it's unclear how much the information impacts the outcome of games.
Some coaching staffs take greater care to disguise their signals, scouts said. Others show less concern, holding up two fingers to indicate Cover 2, for example. Scouts have noticed some defensive coaches sending in two numbers, one for the front alignment and the other for the coverage or blitz.
"We are just looking for blitzes or games up front," the NFC scout said, echoing what others said. "Some guys hide it, some guys do not. Maybe they switch it up a little, but these [players] aren't all rocket scientists. It takes some of them six weeks to get down one signal."

I really think that under the circumstances, the Patriots are a lot like how the Yankees are in baseball: they win a lot, have a large fanbase, and their front office has made them look...well not so good. Everyone is always after the champ, and for all of the Spygate stuff that has gone down, there is not a great deal of respect that is deserved to be quite honest. I think they will obtain respect again from the country when there are all new fresh faces in the club - management and players - starting off on a clean slate...who knows lol

A Charger fan asks if anyone will respect the Patriots ever again, which is a fair question outside of Boston, but some Patriots fans feel that trashing the Chargers somehow absolves the Patriots of deserving any disrespect. Ridiculous. Any non-biased person could clearly see that if the Patriots did nothing wrong, why aren't they complaining about the record punishment? Billichek still denies deliberately doing anything wrong but he won't complain about being personally fined $500K and losing a 1st round draft pick? Even the commissioner said he didn't believe Billichek because Billichek would have to be a complete moron to be warned numerous times by the league for his actions and continue to cheat anyway and still claim he didn't know it was against the rules. Whether or not justice was served, it sure looks like the Patriots were deliberately bending or breaking a rule to get an advantage which is disgraceful, even if you think everyone else is doing it. To lie about it afterwards is cowardly and doesn't deserve any respect. You can debate how much this helped the Patriots but the bottom line is that they were caught cheating and denied it when it's completely obvious they did. It's the cheating and lying that are causing the disrespect.
People don't automatically have to respect the Patriots just because Patriots fans think the issue is dead. OJ "paid his dues" too, but do you have to respect him now? Of course not. OJ is still a lying scumbag even though he was found not guilty. But you'd have to be a moron to think he wasn't lying. And people don't automatically disrespect the best. Tiger Woods is one of the best athletes in the world and everyone respects him, which has a lot to do with his character. Michael Jordan and Wayne Gretzky were very respected and they were the best.

rcurtiss09,
I see by your avatar picture that you're a Colts fan. OK, that's fine with me since the rivalry between the two teams is one of the best going these days, and fan-base bluster aside, the two teams genuinely respect each other as the champions they are.
I wonder though if the rivalry is clouding your judgement. You made some good points, but I disagree with your point about the Patriots' front office embarassing them and the league. The Pats front office (Robert Kraft, Jonathan Kraft, Scott Pioli, and yes Bill Belichick) are among the most respected among their peers in the NFL. I will be the first to concede (as I have many times in these forums) that Belichick cheated and paid the just penalty for his actions. His bosses (Kraft and company) have also made it clear that he would be gone in a heartbeat if he did it again.
You also said, "for all of the Spygate stuff that has gone down", but I would ask, what Spygate stuff? As has been shown, there was lots of smoke but no fire. The rest of the NFL teams' fans should pipe down and let this non-event ride off into the sunset where it deserves to be.
Bring on the real season next year where the actual players will play their hearts out! I can't wait for another Patriots crack at the Super Bowl!
