Browns, Chargers talking trade

Posted: Sunday June 22, 2008 08:34AM ET

The signing of Mark Jones yesterday, in itself, is not a big deal. Jones, a receiver and punt returner, faces a major challenge making the Chargers' opening day roster. But the presence of the four-year veteran gives the Chargers yet another option at receiver, where they will by training camp be without one of their most prolific and dependable pass catchers over the past five years. Sources said yesterday the Chargers have fielded calls from several teams about trading Eric Parker and that Parker will be traded or released by the start of training camp next month. The Browns, whose offensive coordinator is former Chargers tight ends coach Rob Chudzinksi, are among the teams that have shown interest in Parker. The Chargers are believed to be asking for a draft pick somewhere in the final three rounds.

Come on, is this really a need for us?

Yeah I heard about that too and I was a little confused. I'm thinking to myself, "Why? Can he play CB?" If he gets released and the Browns pick him up then I say why not. But it seems to me that they are pretty set at WR. If they are considering trading a draft pick for him I say no way. Now if the do a player for player swap like Droughns for Carter then I guess it would just depend on who that player is. Terry Pluto in today's Plain Dealer seemed to think that they might be looking to use a TE (probably Dinkins) or FB (namely Charles Ali) in a trade...but he was talking about a trade for a CB. I don't know how much value either of those guys has but the team could probably do without them. Dinkins may have a hard time making the team anyway after they drafted Rucker. I like Ali (I always like when a guy doesn't get drafted but still makes the team) but he's probably expendable/replaceable. But still, with Edwards, Stallworth, Jurevicious, Cribbs, Hubbard, Travis Wilson, Kevin Kasper, and others already on board why make a trade for a WR.

There's no question that Parker's going to get cut.  The Chargers are just trying to get whatever they can for him before the first round of cuts take place.  I don't think he'll generate much interest once he hits waivers.  If someone else does claim him, no big loss.  He's no better than the last couple of WR's on the Browns' depth chart as it stands now.  Looking at his career stats, he looks to have been demoted to a backup position who returns punts now and again but has really done nothing special.  He missed all of last season with an injury.  He's damaged goods.

The only reason I can think of is if the Browns are worried that Joshua Cribbs may get hurt. They don't have any good returners after Cribbs.

all i can figure is they need to outscore teams , it makes no sense though when we need a corner . maybe Phil thinks the best defense this year will be the offense .. it should make for a fun ride this year ..

GO Browns ...WOOF !!!!!!!!!!!!!

With all the euphoria about Cribbs we don't have anybody to spell him. Especially if he becomes more involved in the offense. I'm wondering if  Phil is considering Parker as a back-up to Cribbs. After all Steptoe is likely to get cut this year considering the gaggle of WRs  in camp. It would be better to have a CB to back-up Cribbs, so we dont waste a roster spot.  Like Richyett mentioned in his post Ali opening holes for LD might be appealing to the Bolts, but let's not give up a draft pick please...........
