Reading other threads, I saw that people are discussing mostly black vs white stereotypes.

But here is my question: top class soccer players get paid huge amounts of money (comparable to what NFL or NBA players get paid). A lot of soccer players in Europe (especially in France, Holland and Germany) are black. A lot of them grow up either in poor Africa or in the ghettos across Europe. Nevertheless, a lot of them ascend to the very top of world soccer.

But I never hear of anyone in soccer (black or white) being arrested multiple times. Well, maybe I do, but like once in 3 years (and it's some retired English ex-hooligan). So, the point I'm trying to make is that it's not just race. American culture (whatever it is) messes people up when they get filthy rich.

Very true, I live in England and rarely hear about the black, or any other colour, players on the big teams getting arrested.

An interesting viewpoint you have...

There is probably some truth to the concept that American materialism breeds some of these occurences.  We like to think of ourselves as more advanced than most everyone else, but racial overtones cloud a lot of what we do.

It's ironic that our neighbors to the south Mexico have comparable racial problems as well.

I don't know how that perception can change.

There are deep scars from segregation and slavery that are difficult for Europeans to understand.  They make our society uneasy at times--polarizing groups of people and institutions, even pro athletes, who are constantly in the national spotlight.

It's one of those situations that I understand but struggle with the words to explain it.

There is a tendency to remain separate from mainstream society for groups who came to a place not by choice, even if the arrival happened a long time ago.  Unlike other populations in American history, persons of African descent came by force, and we've failed to indoctrine them into society the way other groups have been accepted.  Even if some of it is self-inflicted, as a whole it isn't fair towards black people and I think that sucks.

Our media does a lot to contribute to this in my opinion, because a lot of times people are just being people, and in all fairness certain actions would take place irregardless of color.

To paint any one group of people with a broad brushstroke is probably not reflective of society as a
