Should Gary Williams be fired??

He is the same man, guy, coach that we hired.

He is the same man, guy, coach that won a national championship.

Who will you hire that is better??

Gary Williams should be given a lifetime contract, he took us from Bob Wade and NCAA sanctions (or do you guys forget that) and built us back into a competitive contender.  No sanctions, a national championship and recruiting good young talent.  Look, for a team like Maryland to seriously contend a lot of things have to fall into place.  They won't get the big time recruit like UNC or Duke, if they do great.  But UNC and Duke get them every year, so we may get one once in a while.  We need a heavy Junior / Senior laden team.  We can't do it having to play Fresh. & Soph. consistently.  MD is one of those teams that will contend every three or four years.  Watch what happens this year.  They have  (1) Sr.  ,  (3) Jr. , (7) Soph & whatever Fresh. class they have.  So MD is still at least one year away.  I think 09 - 10 will be a good year for them.  They will have balance, and 3-Sr. & 7 Jr. players.  , then 10 - 11 they will have 7 seniors.  So we will struggle this year, but the next two years should be good.  After that , who knows.

I do know this, Gary Williams took this job when no one wanted it, Bob Wade almost gave us the death penalty, we were under ncaa sanctions, couldn't play on tv, couldn't play in the post season.  You people should not forget that!!!!  Have a little class and show some support.

Why do we accept this as fact...it's not!   Plenty of top tier Freshmen sign letters to schools other than Duke & NC. We've been complaining about local players leaving the area for the last few seasons.

Gary Williams did a wonderful job turning this program around, but the sentiment that it's earned him a lifetime contract is emotional. Many legendary coaches get fired when they fall on harder times. Pick a sport and take a look at their HOF coaches...you'll see plenty that were let go after bringing their franchise to the championship.

The argument that Williams took over a program damaged by Bob wade is valid but in my opinion one sided...It's the ACC, and getting players and coaches to come to a program with the tradition of Maryland ( then and now) should not be a hard sell. Year after year it's arguably the top rated conference in College Basketball...who doesn't want to coach or play in the ACC?

We're talking about of couple bad years between Driesell and Williams...lot's of tradition and success at Maryland.

I don't think Williams should be fired, but if they have another dissapointing season, coupled with no legitmate hope for success the following season....it's probbaly time to find him another position at Maryland.
