I was upset when they did not trade away the 3rd pick. Everybody, including you, thinks the world of Mayo. He did not impress me in the NCAA so much.
I thought there were two sure things in this draft, or three.
1. Derrick Rose would be a great NBA point guard.
2. Michael Beasley would be a scoring, contributing power forward.
3. Timberwolves admin would screw up.
We looked very bleak when we ended up 3rd. I thought the Clippers wanted Mayo so bad we could get anything for him... then we drafted him, a European center who will not see the United States for a while.... and I thought, oh Lord, here we go agan. Mayo is good, but Randy Foye, McCants... we do not need a good 2-guard.
But things changed. I like the Mario Chalmers pick, he is a point guard. I thought "Why did we take 2 guards when we needed someone big, now?". I was about to go to bed thinking the same thoughts of McHale and Stack that I always have, when suddenly.. a Grizzlies trade.
We got rid of Antoine Walker and his contract, Juric, too. We added an elite big man (Kevin Love) and maybe more importantly, Mike Miller, a great shooter. We lost O.J. Mayo, but it made sense to draft him if you were going to trade him.
I could be wrong, so could you. But for the first time in a while, what we did on draft day makes sense. The Montenegro big man is supposed to be a good 5. Love is between 4-5, so is Al Jefferson. We may impove quickly.
On a side note, while Mayo will be good, Chris Douglas-Roberts of Memphis went 40th, I think he has as much chance as Mayo to be a star.
