O.J. Mayo is a very talented player. He may be a superstar if he can keep his butt in a uniform instead of jail. He has made a lot of stupid decisions already. We know with a ton of money that some people make even bigger mistakes. Mayo seems to be that kind of guy. Let's hope he isn't. Let's hope he reaches his potential. Mayo certainly has untapped potential. He started to figure it out by the end of last season. However, guys like Michael Beasley and Kevin Love were more polished all season long. They were more consistent.
But I am surprised that Derrick Rose isn't compared to Mayo more. Both of them were inconsistent earlier in the seaon and became more of a leader by the end of the year. They weren't even the best players on their team at the beginning of the season. I don't know why the NBA forgot that Chris Douglas-Roberts carried Memphis early in the year. Yes, he didn't do as much later in the year, but that was because he was getting everyone else involved and making his team better. He might have been one of the more underrated players taken. He was a steal, I think.
As far as the O.J. Mayo and Kevin Love trade, I guess it just depends where you want to build your team. Both Memphis and Minnesota have a lot of work to do. I think the Minnesota Timberwolves actually got a good deal here. They really got a two for one trade. Kevin Love will, at the very least, be a solid forward. Join him with Al Jefferson, Ryan Gomes, and Corey Brewer and you really have a good frontline to build off of.
Additionally, the Wolves got the underrated Mike Miller. Again, he is not a superstar, but a sharpshooter from the outside. You have to have some good shooters to take some pressure off of the inside scorers. Also, Rashad McCants could really develop next year if they can keep him healthy. He has played both guard positions, so that helps too.
The biggest bonus was that the Wolves got rid of Marko Jaric. Anything they may get out of Brain Cardinal and Jason Collins is just a bonus. I know T-Wolves fans don't want to like Randy Foye because they got rid of Brandon Roy to get him, but he is a solid point guard. Plus, they have Sebastian Telfair to back him up. Come to think of it, I'm not sure Mayo and Telfair are that different of stories. Both were overhyped in middle school and high school. Both came out of it with problems making them look like difficult people to get along with. The only difference is that Mayo was forced to go to college.
Overall, I think it was a better move to get a solid, reliable guy like Kevin Love than to go with an inconsistent guy with an attitude like O.J. Mayo.
