more than F1 needs Indy.

George wants more events to recoup the losses of butchering the speedway to put a road course in the infield. lol.

But the World Championship doesn't need Indy or any other US GP.

I'm sure they more than recouped the cost of putting in the road course in the 8 years they held the race and it will continue to do so with MotoGP this fall.  Indy doesn't need F1 more than F1 needs Indy, the Brickyard was there long before F1 and it will be around forever with or without it.  The US market is HUGE and it's completely untapped by F1 right now.  They may not NEED it, but I garantee they WANT it.  I definately hope it comes back.  I've been to 7 USGP's and with the exception of the year they boycott, it was awesome.  TV does not do those cars justice.  The braking and cornering looks fake when you see them live - it's just sick.

I've also seen rumors of IRL coming back for a second race utilizing the road course which would be the shiznit.

IF, IF, IF F1 returns to the States it needs to avoid Indy at all cost.  The cartoonish track does not deserve a round of the World Championship.  This track isn't even good enough for Mario Cart.  The infield road course of the Indianapolis Motor Speedway is the worst thing to EVER happen to motor racing!!!!

I'm with your Rouge it just reeked of afterthought...which of course it IS. But if they do another USGP they need to do a dedicated road course IMO

After thought?  You do know that F1 officials had a major hand in chosing the designright.  It had to meet their strict guidelines, just like other amentities such as the garages, design restrictions, safety regulations, etc...  The only real problem they had was turn 13, which lead to the boycott a few years ago.  It was the only banked turn on the F1 schedule and the teams had problems with rear tire failures because of it.  That turn has been removed and from I've seen and heard from F1 and FIA is that they are VERY impressed  with the track right now.  F1 will return to Indy in 2009.  Take it to the bank.

You mean F1 has a say with how the track is designed?  Huh, who would have thought it?  The track is a POS, just like Hungary.  Trying to "fit" a road course within the confines of an existing track rarely produces the desired effect, unless that desired effect is slow corners in the in-field, a tiny intermediate straight and a lengthy 20,000 RPM shot through the corners and down the front stretch.  If that is your desired effect, then mission accomplished.  I'm as certain as anyone else that F1 will eventually return to Indy.  I doubt that has as much to do with the track than it does with the fact that Bernie knows Tony George will pay to host it faster than anyone else will.

The 2 tracks were nothing alike. The Hungaroring was a road track designed for motorcycles. 2 or 3 turns were modified for F1. The Brickyard is a 2 1/2 mile oval. A completely new track was made using a couple of the original straight aways... After doing a little research I found that most of the track courses in F1 would fit inside of the Brickyard. Leaving me to believe that your statement

Trying to "fit" a road course within the confines of an existing track rarely produces the desired effect,
would all depend on the size of the existing track... And seeing how the Brickyard is larger then most of the "desired effect" tracks there should not have been an issue when F1 officials designed it. They had plenty of room to create their "desired effect"

I can not be sure but usually the venue is paid for hosting an event. Not the other way around. I am sure there are contracts set to distribute the wealth that the F1 at the Brickyard brought in but I highly doubt Tony George would pay for hosting anything.
