Maybe not the very week after, but they did drop before KU played the next one. If we didn't "drop" them, we set them up (beat them down?) for whoever dealt the blow. I will defer to your reputation for accuracy, since I was relying on memory.
I saw the Syracuse game in Lawrence and made the trip to Columbia for the last game of the year. Six of us arrived with no tickets, found a collapsed coaching tower which we propped against a light pole and watched from beyond the south end zone. Never enjoyed a game more! The car we drove was a retired Highway Patrol (409 engine) and we needed it to get out of town with KS plates.
Well, the must have dropped, or another team wouldn't be #1. I was impressed enough that they were the only team to play 3 #1 teams.
Let's see, Syracuse was #1 the week after playing Kansas, but dropped to #4 in both polls after beating Holy Cross. Iowa lost to Minnesota the week after playing Kansas, and of course Kansas knocked Missouri down (I bet that feels good). For the record, Kansas still counts the win over Missouri, but Missouri takes the forfeit and also counts the win.
That was Kansas' only win over a #1 team.
