Just saw on the tube Davenport got released. Thats kind of surprising because he seemed to have some good back-up games last year. I cant remember them adding any big names at RB this offseason but power to em. Not saying we should look but nothing wrong with more competition.
If we didn't have 5 RB's on our roster i would say go for and sign him but we already have 5 backs. He was good in his Packers days also. Effective in the passing game.
Hes a big RB with a lot of power. His career YPC is i think 4.7 if im not mistaken. Hes a good 3rd down back also. A lot better than Vernand Morency IMO.
If I'm not mistakin wasent Davenport a Fullback in college? I think we should try and sign him and possibly convert him back to his natural position. He could give us much more production out of that FB position and he wouldent be that much of a drop off in terms of blocking either. Not that it's relevant or anything but on Madden I use to make him a FB all the time and his overall rating when from 82 to 94, so I think we should look into this.
I too was a big fan of Davenport. Remember the game he stepped in as the starter. Didn't he almost have 200 yards? The man could always get the short yardage first downs. Except for the one playoff game versus the Eagles. They had a review and still got it wrong (if memory serves correctly). What a bunch of crap. I hope he finds a job somewhere.
The Steelers were trying to trade him, but everyone knew he would be released at some point. Hard to trade someone then. When Willie Parker broke his leg last season, Najeh did not do well as the starter. He started the last game of the regular season and had like 20 yards on 15 carries. Then in the playoff game vs. the Jaguars. He repeated with a similar performance.
Davenport is a big man with speed and overall athletic skills but he never broke out. He had his chances back a few years ago when Ahman Green would go down and Davenport would get hurt himself when he filled in. He is good coming off the bench, but can't handle a starter's load (even with his big frame). He is better than Morency though, and if he would be willing to make a homecoming at the veteran's minimum then why not?
