He better hope he has a huge year or they win the cup otherwise he could be losing a lot of money. Have to give him credit though because it is rare seeing an athlete put the opportunity of winning before cashing in nowadays.
Actually there is no money to be lost. The Wings make money every year. They made money when they had a payroll of 80 Mil and certainly will make money with a cap of 56 mil. The Wings signed Hossa to a one year deal because they were 10 mil under the cap and you can't restructure contracts in the NHL to help your cap number in coming years. They either had to spend the money or loose it. The only downside is that RFA Valtteri Filppula is still unsigned with 2.5 mil in cap space. As for next season with Zetterberg and Franzen are both UFA .I have a hard time believing the Wings can fit all three under the cap. But who knows stranger things have happened. But I just don't see anything getting done for 2009-2010 before Zetterberg is signed, then after that the the other players will know how much the Wings have.

Wow, thats a big time surprise. Yesterday, anyone that would have suggested that Hossa was going to the Red Wings, I would have called a moron. Good pick up by the Red Wings! Its obvious they only have one thing in mind, winning the Stanley Cup every year.

I do have to chuckle a little bit at some of the Penguins fans. You know, the ones who said Hossa was just a jerk looking for a big payday, instead of staying with a real contender in Pittsburgh and wanting to win a cup. Well looks like he just went to the best team in the NHL and did it for less.

Detorit repeat? We'll see. They have to get through the Flyers first!

I agree that the Penguins won't be as good.Obviously the Wings won't repeat, just like they didn't win it this year. What are you smoking? They are definitely the favorites as of right now.
I guess its hard to listen to someone that has the Pirates logo under their name.

when i typed in "sportsline.com/nhl" this morning, too look at the headlines, you know, to see who went were so far and all the crazy stuff goin on right now, the first thing i saw was the "Hossa signs 7.4 Million deal with Champ Wings" headline link. i effin froze. I didn't know what to think. How can the best iv seen in years, become better? Marian Hossa. omfg.

I literally just sat there staring at my screen for a good 10 seconds. I am still stunned. I am just trying to picture that friggin roster in my head. That is one hell of a team. im so excited for this regular season to start. i want to see what this powerhouse can do out there!!!!!!!!

I was convinced that he was going to leave Pittsburgh after the year when we originally made the trade.  Then there were reports that he wanted to stay in Pittsburgh and that he was a priority for management to sign so I felt there was some hope but with July 1st then approaching, I figured he'd probably leave... but as a Penguins fan, hearing that he signed a one-year deal to go to Detroit?  Ouch!

Detroit was already in good shape to defend the Cup, adding an excellent two-way player like Hossa to a team committed to defense is going to help a ton.

While I wish him no harm as a player, I can't help but hope his plan backfires and the Red Wings don't repeat (which I'd have hoped for anyway--I'm a Penguins fan so I'll naturally be rooting for them).  I think it's the fact that this is a one-year deal that makes it sting; he's looking for a quick ride to a championship.  But he's a free agent so I can't blame him either.
