Yeah, we'll have some cap issues but unlike most teams we have a core of young guys at REALLY good salary numbers (especially if salaries keep going up the way they are) and we'll be able to keep more of our core together for longer.

Amen, DG.  Consider this ...

1) Crosby - making $8.7M per.  Shudder to think, but he could have been a free agent two days ago and would have received an offer sheet for $11M that the Pens would have had to match.  He's save the Pens over $2M a season RIGHT NOW ... imagine in a few years.

2) Malkin - making $8.7M per.  Shudder to think, be he could have just held off until next offseason and received an offer sheet for what $12M/year???  (Depends on the cap, I know ... but let's go with that.)  He's saving the Pens around $3M a season RIGHT NOW ... imagine in a few years.

3) Orpik - making $3.75M per.  Turned down $4.25 per, so he is saving the Pens $500K.

4) MAF - making $5M per.  Tough to say what he would command on the open market, but consider that he actually took less than guys like Vokoun and Huet are making today.  This is a steal ... saving the Pens anywhere from $500K to $1M a year RIGHT NOW.

That's about $6.5M/year in savings these four guys are giving the Pens.  And that's by today's standards.  With the way these idiot GM's are throwing out cash like they print it themselves, the average salary is only going to increase as the years go by.  In three or four years, all four of these guys are going to look even more and more like bargains.

Granted, all these guys got very nice contracts ... I know I could certainly live ... er ... comfortably just on Orpik's salary.  But kudos to all four of them for sticking with the team when they could have easily gone for the bigger pay day.

So I'll had Whitney to your list at 4/year.  MAF worries me just a bit, he played lights out after he came back from injury so I'm hoping that's the guy we see out of the gates.

Staal will be interesting...hopefully he follows all the other guys leads and takes less than market...assuming he'd fit under the cap regardless.

Montreal Canadiens sign UFA forward Georges Laraque (3-year, $1.5 million).

I can't wait for Laraque v. Godard IV, V, VI, ?

Check out the youtube bouts between these two:

Well, on July 2, 2008 at 5:01pm see page 14... I had a strange feeling that the Penguins would offer him a contract...I personally think he would do well fitting into our system, I watch a game last year and thought he could be an easy 20-30 goal scorer in the pens system....I wanna say that Satan would mesh well with Sid or Malkin but I'm concern about his attitude problems and no shows during the previous seasons...Satan had good players around him in New York but no body like Sid or Malkin...This could be a gamble, then again only time will tell...

I think the penguins need to do two more things before they are finish this offseason and thats move Sydor and his 2.5 mil? while signing either Williams or Nagy...I would love to see Huselius sign with the pens but his asking price might be too high now....

Another player that I mention in a previous post was Hossa (Marcel)...I think he would fit in with our 3rd or 4th line... I read an article about him about a year ago and it was nothing but praises regarding his skills just needed some help from others...Won't that be crazy to lose a Hossa and gain another Hossa while winning the cup...

Right now we have $6 million left (according to TIOPS) that's betting if  we get rid of Sydor.

I would love to see Caputi in the lineup next season. Don't forget about him.

Everything I'm hearing about Caputi has been positive, but that they want him to spend a season with the Baby Pens.  Of course, that was the consensus on Staal two seasons ago, so we'll see what happens in training camp.

I don't think the Pens have the cap room to make any more significant signings ... remember they will want to leave some wiggle room so they can make a deadline deal if necessary.  However, the Pens need grit.  Matt Cooke is still sitting out there.  I could easily see the fans change their RUUUUUUTU chants to COOOOOOKE chants in a heartbeat.
