If Goodell and the owners want to put a stop to the salaries of rookies and the signing bonuses then the players should not have to deal witha draft. Everyone should be a free agent right out of high school or college. Face it, it will not happen and deservidly not, these guys are worth every penny they are getting because the teams are giving it to them. A guy gets drafted out of college and gets a signing bonus of say $1.5 million and a 5 year deal of say $10 mil if he plays but anly $5 mil if he doesn't. Is it his fault if he doesn't play espacially if were talking about aaron rogers of the Packers. And because he hasn't been playing he will be the second lowest paid qb in the NFL this coming year making something like $660,000. Shit for a starting qb in the NFL with 3 years of experience. In other words, Aaron Rogers didn't have a choice of who he was going to play with so he should be paid acording to his potential and not what he has done.

This post is bs.  We are all dumber for having to read it.  Please remove this CBS...

The NBA is thriving under such a program...  The money has reached astronomical proportions, and the NFL is the only sport where your first contract is generally your largest.  This is a joke.

For every Jerry Rice and Terrell Owens, who scrape their way into the league on a FA/minimum contract, you have 3-4 Charles Rogers/Mike Williams types who cash in and underperform....

All I'm sayin is this.  I've never seen so much money go to players yet to earn it on the pro level...  This is a lot like gambling for NFL execs.

The saved money should absolutely not go back into the owner's pockets...  If Gene Upshaw had a brain and a desire to keep his job he ought to find a way to redistribute annual savings into a trust for retired veterans...  The families of battered and scarred former players sure would appreciate it...

There has to be a draft..........it's the only way to make potentially great players go to crappy teams....... to try and even things up and keep parody....

RaiderCal7, my point is that if the owners are going to try and put a cap on players signing out of college then the players should be free agents out of college and should be able to sign with whoever they want. For every move the owners have the players will have a counter move. There is one other thing that people should consider and that is the players coming into football are much harder to figure out as far as if they are going to be good or not whereas in basketball you only have a few draft picks per team and it is much easier to see the talent coming in. Although I thought Reggie Bush was not as good as all the hype that was out there I still figured that someone would pay him tons of money because of his marketing ability to the team. And that is exactly what happened, he had more commercials than most players would ever dream about and hadn't ran a play in the NFL yet. Good work by the Texans for there bold move at the time.

Obviously getting rid of the draft would make at least 10 teams never competitive ever again and that will never happen but the draft has made both owners and the players a lot of money thanks to the parity of today's NFL.  The owners don't really have a choice when signing their rookies.  Saying that owners don't have to sign those rookies to that much money if they don't want to is the same argument as saying that Aaron Rogers didn't have to sign his contract if he wasn't happy with it either.  If the Packers didn't have to pay their draft picks as much money there might be more left over for Rogers.  The high rookie contracts are also eating away at the potential money that Rogers can expect on his next contract too.  The bottom line is that the dues paying members should be the ones who's interests are protected, not rookies who may never play a down in the NFL.  Getting rid of the draft isn't the solution though.  It would cost all players money in the long run if they did away with the draft and let people sign wherever they want to because the league wouldn't be balanced anymore so that's not the solution.

Lots of professions make you prove yourself before you earn real money.  Call it an internship, practicum, articling, journeyman, whatever.  The draft and a rookie salary cap is great for the sport, which helps everyone involved except those players who don't deserve the money in the first place.  I've never heard of a union paying people different starting wages.  I've seen unions fight to make sure the most imcompetent person makes as much as the best employee in the company, but I've never seen one fight to protect the right to single someone out and pay them more.

Your proposal of no draft and only free agency would make the problem worse, not better. The top athletes will be involved in a bidding war with the player accepting the highest bid to play for a team, causing owners and teams to pay more and more money. Half the league would suck if you were able to pick your own team.  And your last sentence only strengthens the argument FOR Jake Long............"Rodgers didn't have a choice of who he was going to play with so he should be paid according to his potential and not what he has done".....................that is what is happening now!!!!! The teams with the worst records get the top picks, and they are losing teams. The players chosen don't have a choice, and THEY ARE NOW being paid based on their potential.

Your post doesn't make any sense at all.
