Let me preface this by saying I love the enthusiasm of the Pirate faithful here at sportsline. I have noticed a few of you pushing this ECU schedule as "the test case" for a non-BCS National Championship. I don't understand what you are saying at all. I am glad our name is getting out there and all, but this years schedule is just about identicle to last year's schedule. We play our usual assignment against C-USA and our non-conference schedule is the same as last year except we trade UNC for UVa. I really don't see a dimes worth of difference between Virginia and UNC in terms of prestige nationally or in strength of opponant. It begs the question. Why is this group so jazzed about this year's schedule and we heard none of this talk when it was LAST years schedule. I am a little confused.

I may not have been as vocal about it last year, but I was certainly thrilled with last year's schedule as well. Playing 4 games against regional BCS teams helps our profile in a number of ways. The fact that VT and WVU are both also top 25 teams (possibly even top 10) makes those games even higher profile.

I'm not in favor of a non-BCS championshipo, mostly because I think that would be the same as creating a whole new level of college football (like what happened when Div. 1 split into 1-A and 1-AA). I do not want to see the Pirates playing at anything below the top level of college ball. I do, however, think there either needs to be a playoff system, or at least a serious revamping of the BCS system, so that it is not so heavily biased towards the current crop of BCS schools.

KeyWest, I could be wrong but I think that all the renewed enthusiasm might be because of the way that the Pirates performed last year. You are correct, This years schedule is identicle to last years. Skip has the Pirates on the right track. He has many experienced players returning. He also seems to have a strong 2"nd and 3"rd on the offensive and deffense side of the ball. This could be a factor for all the buzz. Going in to 2007 I think there where many question marks about the team.  ( QB--- Runningback---) The QB situation has been put to rest. We have a strong combo in Kass and Pinkney. As for the runningback ?  It"s going to be very hard to replace what we had with Chris. I do think that  Johnson, Lindsay,Brockmeyer and company can do the job though. Do you think that D Harris might be a diamond in the rough? He kind of reminds me of Keith Stokes.

I have to agree with Jim! LAst year i actually believe that we can pull this off this year. Last year we had no idea who the QB was going to be and now wer have a more stable team than last year. I guess it is because we are so excited about what could happen this year. I am not relly pushn our schedule as a ticket to the big east, more as something for respect.

I wondered what the response would be...and no one got the points I was thinking. Our last taste of football before last season started was a pretty sad performance against South Florida in the Slumlord.com bowl. This year we are coming off a win against an opponant many of us non-BCS honks considered the uncrowded 2007 National Champions. The difference is us! We aren't looking at that VT game and hoping we don't get embarrassed. We aren't even acknowledging that beatdown we got against WVU...they won't beat us like that in Greenville...not a chance, right?  The difference is the difference between ending the season on a winning note or a losing one. I personally am not trying to make a case for us being undefeated National Champs...But I think we have the best look at a conference championship that we have had in years. And our non-conference is pretty sturdy...as it always is. We will sell out our season tickets again this year...and not a moment too soon with the new stadium expansion not too far down the road. Things are looking good in Pirate country, but everything looks rosier when your last memory of ECU football was a win.

I am guessing that you meant the 2007 uncrowned national champions. I wouold not go that far because i do not think that they would have beaten Florida in the NC game!

The difference is us! We aren't looking at that VT game and hoping we don't get embarrassed. We aren't even acknowledging that beatdown we got against WVU...they won't beat us like that in Greenville...not a chance, right?

I think that it is not so much that we ended the season on a winning note as to how well that we performed in Blacksburg last year. I had a great amount of confidence last year going into that VT game amongst many people that felt we were going to get destroyed. Especially Lee Corso who said that the Hokies were going to score 21 points just on Special Teams. I have acknowledged in one of my posts this year that beatdown that we took last year at WVU but I also said that I don;t think it will be the same this year.

I personally am not trying to make a case for us being undefeated National Champs...

Honestly, i dont think anybody is, but there are a lot of people who think that we can beat VT.

but everything looks rosier when your last memory of ECU football was a win.

I think that it is this as well as we have a more stable roster this year than we did last yeaer. AS i stated in my last post, we did not even know who the best QB or even the starting QB was going to be until half way through the season. CJ was a total surprise to me as well as some other people I am sure. We seemed to have actually gotten a lot better than we were last year. We actually have the deepest RB position tha we have had in years with at least 5 or 6 guys looking to contribute in just that alone. Beating Boise St was a great accomplishment, but I think a better one would be to win CUSA and pick up a Liberty Bowl win or even a BCS win if we can get there. If I am not mistaken, the last couple of Liberty Bowls have been us getting destroyed by the SEC #6 team. That is not a good name for us! We need to step up and take them down or possibly even the #1 team down.
