Scuppy, I voted to move on. Like another poster, I am very conflicted. I have been watching the Packers since Dan Devine was coach. Never had I been as excited as during the Favre reign from 92-08, and that was due to the emergence of BF as a future hall of fame QB (mostly).
During the last 4 or so years there has been allot of banter about whether Favre should or should not retire, which I clearly see as being propegated by the media and not Favre. Prior to last season I honestly thought that it was time for Favre to retire, I was very wrong, as last season was great with him at the helm. When he announced his retirement, I was one of the Packer fans that was supportive of Brett's decision. I understood it. I supported it.
I also was one of the Packer fans that supports Rodgers now. It has become "his time", he payed his dues holding a clipboard for 3 years. He has learned the offense, he has learned from the coaches and Brett, and he is deserving of his opportunity to start. He has the support and respect of his team-mates, and he is clearly ready. Do I think he will come out and be as productive as Favre? No. I remember when Favre first became our starter, and I spent many a time being frustrated, but in the long run it was great to have him, and I think that it will be the same with Rodgers.
I believe other fans see this as a quite simple process, Rodgers out, Favre in. Well I am quite certain that the coaches have been working diligently in the off-season. Each year they go through and adjust the playbook, from things they learned last year, to new personnel moves, etc. When Favre retired, they adjusted the offensive playbook to accompany Rodgers' strengths. It will be a similar offense, but it will be different. We have currently 46 players on offense including Rodgers that have been learning that playbook. So I guess I am saying 1. it's just not as simple as plugging Favre into the offense, and 2. it is very unfair to the rest of the team, especially Rodgers.
The way I see it, if we bring Favre back we have a great opportunity to go to the super bowl this year. Rodgers will end up with a bitter taste about the organization, and will be gone as soon as his contract is up, and we look to Brohm to be our starting QB of the future. This will put us back about 2-3 years in our development as a team.
If we don't bring Favre back, Rodgers is the guy, finally gets his chance, and I believe he will be our next franchise QB. We might not have that good of a chance to go to the super bowl this year, but we have the opportunity to be able to get there multiple times in the next few years.
I understand the "win now" mentality, but I honestly believe it is time to move this team forward without Favre at the QB position, develop our future QB in Rodgers, and look toward the opportunity for greatness in the near future.
