Observer - great point and pretty funny. But 20 spots lower? Look at UCLA at #6 then - I am staying within the Pac 10 only for apples. Tough OOC in Fresno, Tenn and BYU - but again 14 spots ahead of USC? I'm not arguing - I just find it slightly inaccurate.

We would not be in this discussion had you not infered that the SEC's schedule was tougher.

"INFERED"

My post had nothing to do with how strong the SEC's schedule was, it had everything to do with the point made.  What would the PAC's overall OOC schedule looked like that year had each of the teams had to dig up the 12th game, as every other conference.  They were given that game on a silver platter and even then they played the same % of 1-AA teams as the SEC teams did.

What would the schedules look like if the roles were reversed?

Inaccurate?  I'll buy that.  It's just one opinion.  Pre-season SOS rankings are the nearest thing to being worthless as you can get anyway.

That's true - I guess the same can be said of preseason rankings, but it's fun to look at and discuss. :)

Let's follow this conversation:

I said:

And yet, when scheduling 4 non-conference games, the PAC-10 still managed a tougher schedule than the other BCS conferences.

You responded:

Not always.  As a matter of fact the first year they went to the 9 game conference, the PAC played the same % of 1-AA games as the SEC.  The SEC schools that played 1-AA teams, for the most part, had to, just to get the 12th game.  Not so in the PAC where the 12th game turned out to be the 9th conference game.  How does that happen?

What did I say other than the PAC-10 schedules tougher than the SEC.  What did you mean by saying "not always" if you weren't disagreeing with the only thing you highlighted?

If you weren't infering the SEC's schedule was tougher (in a year that was outside my point as is) than you communicated VERY poorly because you said "Not always" in response to my saying the PAC-10's schedule is tougher.

Pre-season rankings are generally worthless, however not completely worthless.  They are educated guesses and can give us a decent idea where teams stand.  You know some of these guess are right and some are wrong, though.  Pre-season strength of schedule rankings are a compilation of a bunch of educated guess, some of which, odds tell us,  we know are wrong.  Therefore we know that pretty much every team compiled in these rankings have some poor guesswork, maybe as many as 5-6 guess that are off.  What are the chances of accuracy with that many guesses?

Nope, agree with you entirely. But in the case of SOS, looking within a specific sample - as the case in looking at the Pac 10 scheduling in this latest discussion - if the variables are minor then it is difficult to justify a significant difference. This is the case with UW vs USC. Now using USC vs LSU preseason SOS, I say that it far more difficult and the values have less accuracy. Although historical data suggests playing several Div 1aa like opponents is less difficult than BCS conference teams.
