Now that Federer has become Nada's biiiich, there should not be anymore talk about Fed being the greatest ever. He's not even the greatest of his era. Nadal is, he's 12-6 against Federer despite being 5 years younger than Federer. As I've been saying all along Federer was the lucky benefiicary of playing in a dreadful period of tennis when the only competition was Stiffs like andy Roddic and the soft hitting Hewitt. So big deal he racked up 12 majors playing against Dog crp competition.
Sampras won 14 majors playing tremendous competition, and alltime great players like Becker, Edberg, a young Agassi, plus won 7 Wimbledons against great serve and volleyrs like, Becker, Edberg, Rafter, Goran, Stich, Krajicek. If Sampras played in an era where his main competition was Roddick he would've had 25 majors. Sampras is by far the greatest and no player owned him, PERIOD. That's what was so great about Sampras, where Fed is already owned by Nadal who is 22. Fed's good but would've only won about 5 or 6 majors against great compettion like Sampras had to deal with. He's the most overrated player in history due to the dog crp compettion Fed was competiting against.
Thankfully we won't have to hear any more talk about nadal's whipping biach, Fed, being the greatest. That title belongs to Pete by a mile. He proved it last year anyway playing Federer virtually even at age 36 retired for 6 years.
Enjoy the a$$kicking Fed, with Nadal and Djokovic now entering the prime it's only going to get worse. Thankfully some good players came along in time, to expose Federer as being a product of a dog crp era.

Roger has 12 majors to Rafa's 5. The reason the head to head is in Nadal's favor is because most of those matches are on clay. Rafa barely ever makes it to hard court finals so barely ever plays Fed on a surface favoring him, and NAdal is just starting to be a force on grass. Roger is only 26 years old and will bounce back a better player. Don't be surprised to see him win 5 more Wimbledon's after this wake up call and until Rafa can show he can compete on every surface he cant by any means call Federer his biach.

The greatest is neither Federer nor Sampras. It's Rod Laver. Period.

The one sport that is very subjective when stating "greatest ever" is tennis. You have to take into account that is was amateur and pro before 1968. Then you have the Open era starting in 1968. Now you have 4 different surfaces in the 4 majors. As great as Laver was, he never won a major on hardcourts. Sampras never even came close at the French. Federer's career is no where near over. Was it not Federer who ended Sampras's reign at Wimbledon.
I'll give you that Sampras had tough competition against Edberg, Agassi, and Becker. The rest of those guys you mention are not in the same class. As great as Sampras was, 25 majors? You are out of your mind. You are also out of your mind to state that Federer is not the best of his era at this time. Like one of the poster's stated before, lets see what Nadal can do on hardcourts.
From 1968 to today, here are my top 5 in no particular order.
Laver- Won the Grand Slam, but on only 2 surfaces.
Connors- Won the US Open on 3 different surfaces, most ATP wins, 8 majors
Borg - 11 majors, makes you wonder how he never won a US or Australian Open
Sampras - 14 Majors, if only he could figure out how to win on clay
Agassi- career Golden Grand Slam on 4 different surfaces (for those who disagree that the surfaces are not a major point, I strongly disagree), 8 majors, most Masters wins
Next 5 (no order): Lendl, McEnroe, Edberg, Becker, Wilander.
Can we not rush to judgement on Federer and Nadal. Right now they are clearly the best in tennis but let's wait until their career's are over so we can look at the entire resume.

Did you watch the match today? I don't understand how anyone who watched the match could call Federer Nadal's whipping boy, or whatever. The difference between watching Nadal fall to his knees, and watching Federer fall to his in celebration was a couple of points. This was one of the greatest matches in history, why do we hFaave to make judgements from it? The two best tennis players on the planet right now facing off in a classic match filled with ridiculously good shots, many momentum swings, and great fun for the fans.
A year ago people were ready to crown Federer all time king of tennis. It was a matter of when, not if, he would break Pete's record. Don't get me wrong, I loved Pete when he played, but to say that just because Federer lost one Wimbledon to a great player in Nadal takes him off pace to break the record is ridiculous.
In 1996, a 24 going on 25 year old Pete Sampras lost at Wimbledon and had no Grand Slams that year, then he went on to win the U.S. Open and the '97 Australian and continued his illustrious career. What is to keep Federer from doing the same, coming back and winning both hard court Grand Slams, then going on another Wimbledon streak just as Pete did?
Rafa upped the bar today, and tennis fans everywhere were the big winners. But make no mistake that the world's number 1 will do everything in his power to surpass that bar yet again. As a tennis player and fan, I can only hope that next year we will again get to witness a match like today's. Dont count out the Fed Express just yet.

Not to let facts get in the way of a good argument, but...
Sampras won 13 of his 14 major titles after 1992.
Stefan Edberg won six majors, ZERO after 1992.
Boris Becker won six majors, ONE after 1991 (1996 Aussie Open).
Sampras beat the likes of Cedric Pioline and Todd Martin to win majors, players certain to come up in a conversation of the greatest players of all time. Sampras also lost back to back US Opens to Marat Safin and Lleyton Hewitt, players of Federer's "dog crp" era whom Mr. Federer routinely thrashes.
Nice try, though, on your clearly well-reasoned positions. Keep up the good work...

I agree that we certainly need to wait years before we start looking at Federer & Nadal in any sort of career comparison with those who came before them. Enjoy their playing while understanding that players this great come along every generation or so: they're rare.
And while Pete Sampras was amazing, his struggles at the French open (0 titles? please) mean that he will NEVER be the greatest of all time. Definitely in the top tier, but his Clay Court skills just couldn't cut it.
