Ok so I am going to need some help here but lets look at next year and the possible money we'll have to play with....

All hypothetical here but lets just say that the following players and salaries, are all gone next year. What's the saved dollar amount and who should, and could the Reds go get with this extra cash. I dont know the exact dollar amounts so correct me when I am wrong..

Adam Dunn-10 mil option?

Ken Griffey- 12 mil option?

Mike Stanton- ??

Corey Patterson- 3mil

Josh Fogg- 1mil

Bronson Arroyo- ??

David Ross- ??

David Weathers- ??

With the missing dollar amounts we are at 26 mil saved. Let's figure out that number.

9.5 million saved on Bronson Arroyo for '09
3.5 million option on David Ross, 2.5 million actually coming off the books
2.75 million on David Weathers
3.5 million already eaten on Mike Stanton

let me say i would like to keep david ross (assuming no improvement is received in a trade this year, which i doubt).  here's the scenario i would prefer:

griffey off the books, -12.5
stanton off the books, -3.5
weathers, -2.75
fogg, -1
patterdoosh, -3
Kent Mercker, -.6
valentin, -1.3

that's 24.5 million in savings approximately next year.  if arroyo is gone as well it jumps to 34 million - a very significant amount for our team.  however, the only thing we lose on the field are arroyo's mediocre innings - and a bunch of worthless contracts.  34 million in almost pure gain (except maybe griffey's "presence" in the lineup, and marginal innings from weathers).  we could sign a decent pitcher with that, or an everyday shortstop, or an upgrade at catcher, or two solid relievers, or several other pieces.

I still think you need to sign Adam Dunn to a multi-year contract. He's only 28 years old and his offensive numbers are unreplacable. I'd say 3-4 years at 14-15 milion per year would keep him in Cincy. He's gonna get at least that on the open market from the Yankees, Red Sox, Angels, Dodgers, etc.... Even signing him, you'd still have money left to do some good things with free agency.

Adam Dunn is making 13 mil this year.  If he hits free agency he will make more than that.  I didnt think the Reds had a club option for Dunn for next year, I thought they used that for this year.  So unless the Reds work out a long term deal before free agency, Dunn will be gone because the Reds could never compete with the Yankees, Red Sox, or Mets.

I am totally against signing Dunn long term. He is home run hitter who walks a lot,  but also is horrendous with runners in scoring position, strikes out a ton and is a defensive liability. Reds need to get what they can for him by July 31st and move on. Hopefully Matsui for the
