I know this is a who cares in Boston or NY....

But Carlos Guillen is one of the major reasons Detroit is in a mess right now. He is a terrible 3rd Basemen and not worthy of our slot. Pudge not getting selected shows that he is now on the a big downward spiral......

Thames would have been a great choice....To bad fans don't pick the subs...

Dude...are you serious?

Guillen has been moved from SS to 1st base to the Outfield and now to 3rd.  4 positions in a year.  Through all that moving, he has been the most consistent hitter on the team...ALL year.   He's not a gold glover at any position, but he's not much (if any) worse than who we have at SS or 3B otherwise.  (Renteria or Cabrera).

Guillen is the FARTHEST thing from the reason the Tigers aren't as good as we thought - he's one of the reasons it's not even worse.

Still should have more than one all-star.  Pudge should be on there over Varitek.

"Pudge should be on there over Varitek"

I agree that Pudge would be a better choice than Varitek, but how about A.J. Pierzynski (.296, 7, 33). Compare that with Varitek (.218, 7, 27) and Pudge (.290, 3, 28).

Varitek should be embarassed his manager made a gift of an All-Star game appearance to him. The right thing to do is to claim injury and force Francona to make a real selection.

What about Polanco as Detroit's at large pick?

Matt the reason for the mess is because Guillen has played four positions.....Remember we traded young starting pitching to Atlanta because Carlos could not play SS anymore. Carlos received a nice contract and now we need to find a spot of him to play. He didn't work out at 1st base and he is a diasater at 3B. Left Field might be his best option, but it keeps Thames on the bench and when Marcus is hot look out.....Carlos, Sheff, and Edgar are all high paid problems right now. Good thing Edgar's contract isn't long-term....

I totally agree that they overspent for Renteria, but the 3 players I feel have been snubbed, have got to be Magglio Ordonez, Placido Polanco, and Armando Gallaraga.
  • Mags- I know he's injured, but you can't argue with his production.  Past production aside (MLB title last year), he is a phenomenol clutch hitter. He's batting .307 with 12HR, while Ichiro is hitting .304 with only 3 HR.  Ichiro is a singles machine, but he doesn't have the power Mags has.
  •  Polanco-  Look at the stats- .313 BA & .406 Slugging %, and he plays great defense.  Sorry, but he is playing better then Padroia.
  • Gallaraga- Did any one see this guy coming out and having a 7-2 record?  He's been the best starting pitcher in their rotation.  How does he not get a nod more then Guillen?
The thing that is most annoying is that if you're spending what the Tigers are on their roster, you would think there would be more then 1 All-Star.  But then again, money doesn't always buy championships (with the exception of the 1997 Marlins-who's roster has many familiar faces on Detroit-Sheff, Pudge, Renteria & not to mention management Leyland & Dombrowski).

It's got to be Polanco.  I'm a Tigers fan, but, by the way they're getting embarrassed by  Minnesota, probably don't deserve anyone.  If Rodriguez is a part time starter on his own team, how can he be an All-Star?
