The all England Club made a conscious choice to improve the quality of the men's tennis. The sport was being taken over by the equipment at Wimbledon and they chose to slow the play down, by switching out the grass.
Since that time, we've seen more epic matches and guys like Nadal/Federer winning at the baseline. For one, I appreciate this type of tennis, one the other hand, it was pretty awesome watching guys pound serves and show off their skills at the net. Unless Wimbledon changes back to the old grass, it looks like the days of serve and volleying as a legitimate skill set in tennis is over.
That may be a natural change if we continue to see the type of tennis witnessed yesterday. That match was adrenaline packed from start to finish and will go down as one of the greatest matches played to date and will most likely be argued over as one of the best matches for a long time.
Losing serve and volleying may be a small price to pay for that sort of tennis battle.
