For the first time ever...I will fully agree with SMAN1965. Federer came in a time when he played no-body. So from his Inauguration into the sport he has won not having to play any serious seasoned competition.
Sampras came into the league having to play seasoned #1's and other stiff, soon to be great competition. And then after the learning curve, was dominating.
Federer's past competition has been youth. Young 17-20 year olds. But, now they are maturing in the sport and we are seeing the result. He is losing regularly.
I don't think Federer is a truly bad tennis player, just not the greatest. Even if he bests Sampras with 15 majors, it wasn't the same skilled seasoned competition.
But, I still like Big Mac. He was great entertainment and awesome tennis player.

The scary thing about it is that Rafa is like the Lebron of tennis. He hasn't even begun to reach his full potential. you ask any NBA player why LeBron is so scary is because he is still getting better. Rafa 2 years ago was ONLY winning clay matches. now he just took out the reigning king of wimbldon......one word SCARY Funny stuff. Lebronze is the guy who always chokes, and is famous for winning bronze medals and getting swept in the finals. Nadal is a true champion. Big, Big, difference. One is a winner, the other a loser.

To pooh pooh Federer's accomplishments while saying Sampras is the best ever is utter nonsense. Federer has won 3 majors in a year three times, while Sampras never did. Roger has won Wimbledon 5 times in a row and the US Open 4 in a row. Pete never did that as well. I think we are overrating Sampras's overall opponents while underrating Federer's. Why is it that someone dominates over a 4 year period (04-07) winning 11 majors, 2 Finals, and 2 Semi Finals finishes, has a record of 99-5 in those majors (total of 16), and is now horsesh!t. I'm not buying it is because of lesser competition that Federer has amassed his victories. I'd argue that the guy is just plain that much better than everyone else in that period. Is it because he has lost in 2 finals to the #2 player and a Semi Final to the #3 player, this year? Was Federer not ill this year? No respect. He is 12-4 in major finals with the 4 losses to Nadal who just happens to have won 4 French Open's in a row and won an incredible match this past weekend for his 5th major. I'll give you that Nadal has his number. Federer is now 2-4 against him in Major finals. I think that hardly qualifies Federer as Nadal's biich. But Roger has some work to do.
Sman, still waiting for an explanation on how Pete can be considered the greatest with an awful French Open record. At least Federer has 3 Finals to his credit, while Pete's is one Semi. I too miss the mostly serve and volleyer, but those days are gone. You are not going to win on a consistent basis playing that way in today's game.
Federer is 26, has 55 ATP wins, 12 majors . At this point he is a little behind Sampras (64 and 14), but a little ahead at the same age and is definitely one of the best ever at this time. I don't think either is the greatest ever, but Federer has some tennis left in him. He has the chance to be recognized as the best ever. Anyone who does not accept that is a moron. Again, he has some work to do. Overrated? Hardly. Lets wait to see the total resume when his career is over.

So if you want to say Federer is a better clay court player than Sampras, OK. So is sergie Brugera, Googa, Muster, Vilas and a bunch of other Euro's. Obviously serve and volleyers like Sampras, Becker, Edberg, McEnroe's game wasn't met for clay. There's a reason that Wimbledon and the U.S Open are considered the 2 biggest majors. Because that's really what tennis is about. And Sampras is the Greatest Wimbledon and U.S Open player ever. PERIOD. HIS 7 WIMBLEDON'S against TREMENDOUS grass court competition is miles ahead of the 5 Federer won against GARBAGE competition. Pete beat Rafter, (3-0 against Fed), Goran (wimbledon Winner, Rafter, Agassi, Becker, and who has Federer beat? The stiff andy Roddick and Nadal twice, A clay court specialist , and Philipousis, The Bachelor with bum knees. Federer's last 3 semifinalists at Wimbledon was Bjorkman, Gasquet and the washed up unranked Safin. This is GARBAGE competition. Federer couldn't win when great competition was around. He had to wait for these guys to retire and get old before winning. Then he cleaned up.
You did a good job talking about how good the guys were that beat Federer. Why don't you talk about the guys Federer beat to win his 12 majors. Crappola. Roddick, Gonazales, Baghdatis, Soft hitting washed up Hewitt, Clay court specialist Nadal who has no serve. That's why Sampras is so much better. He won 7 Wimbledon's and 5 U.S opens against TREMENDOUS competition not dogsht that Fed's been beating.
Finally a young player like Nadal develops into a great player and completely owns Federer, the FRAUD. REmember, no one OWNED SAMPRAS, PERIOD! And Fed is now Nadals property. So learn the game and think for yourself. Don't listen to McEnroe who is paid to hype the game and it's current top players. Reality is Fed beat sht comp and it's no wonder Pete played Fed even in 4 matches at age 36, 6 years removed from the game. He's simply a much, better player. Deal with it.

I have to laugh at the bias you show against Federer. Like others before myself have stated, I can't consider Sampras as the best ever due to his complete meltdown on clay with the exception of one French Open & the Russian Davis Cup tie. Federer's competition are not legendary mainly due to their inability to win Grand Slams (mainly due to Roger!). Nadal's the best ever on clay & should win many more French Open's before he's done. Do you think Pete would have stood a chance any better than Roger on clay against Nadal. How about Pete's chances against Roger on clay? I didn't think so! Roger is #1 in the world because of his year round dominance of the sport. Nadal's style of play is suitable for softer surfaces like grass or clay but on the hard courts; his body breaks down regularly. That's why he won't pass Roger anytime soon unless he pulls off a miracle & wins the US Open. This won't happen because there are too many players who will exploit his serve & apply immediate pressure on him. That's why guys like Blake, Berdych, & Youzhny give him fits on hard courts. His rhythm gets disrupted by the quick tempo.
For your argument that Pete would dominate against Federer's era. As good as Pete as is; he wouldn't be a lock on the current Wimbledon courts which feature a slower grass then the old days. This has helped the baseliners a ton in getting more balls back. The match up of Nadal's lefty forehand to a righties backhand would be even nastier for Pete as his backhand was significantly weaker than Roger's.
Having grown up watching the McEnroe, Borg, Connors era & then the Sampras, Agassi, Courier era; I can't say that I've ever seen tennis played at a higher level than Federer & I was a Sampras fan! Roger reminds me of a more powerful version of Pete. It's obvious that each generation produces physically stronger players than the previous (look at the women of this era for proof of this!), so it's always tough to compare. But I feel I can accurately respond due to my background as a former Pro myself having played in Europe in the mid eighties. Regardless of your opinion of Roger, you must admit that Pete usually had 4-6 losses a year to players that you'd never heard of. Roger's losses are to Nadal, Djokovic, maybe Nalbandian. He's that consistent. Most of the people you listed who "owned" Roger like Henman, for example, amassed their wins before he got to #1. Henman never beat him since that point. Heck, one of my friends beat Sampras when he was 17 in a satellite tourney & he never played him again. I guess he "owns" Sampras based on this!
My all time top five:
1) Rod Laver (would have blown away Pete's Grand Slam total if he didn't lose 4+ years by turning Pro as the Slams were amateur only then)
2) Roger Federer (He wins a French & he's #1, he wins 18+ Slams overall regardless & he's got the title too!)
3) Pete Sampras (Great in the big events but weak on clay nonetheless)
4) Andre Agassi (Jimmy Connors on steroids! Strongest modern player on all surfaces outside of Roger)
5) Jimmy Connors (gets the nod over Borg for his durability & over Mac for his better skills on clay)
It's always good to argue back & forth the merits of one player versus another but what disappoints me most about "sman1965" comments is his lack of grasping the significance of Sunday's finals. There's yet to be a comment by him as to the quality of the match which was outstanding. That's a shame as we witnessed one of the most entertaining matches of this (or any!) era. It rivals the Blake-Agassi open match a few years ago & the amazing Agassi-Sampras Aussie Open quarterfinal when Agassi beat Sampras in an epic five setter. Good stuff!!!
