Week 3, Game 2 of the Regular Season
Hooch's Hustlers vs. UFWs

After the one month process in which sixteen members drafted and assembled a team of all-time greats, we of the Ultimate All-Time NBA Mock Draft are ready for the voting process. Anyone may vote as long as they give a valid reason saying why they voted for the team they did. Please take a moment to analyze the following teams and their gameplans:

Hooch's Hustlers (2-0)

  1. G - Allen Iverson - (38 minutes)
  2. G - John Havlicek - (38 mintes)
  3. SF - Bernard King (38 minutes)
  4. PF - Wes Unseld (35 minutes)
  5. C - Bill Russell (38 minutes)
  1. BE - G - Michael Redd (8 minutes)
  2. BE - G/F - Bruce Bowen (10 minutes)
  3. BE - G/F - Penny Hardaway (0 minutes)
  4. BE - F/C - Chris Bosh - (25 minutes)
  5. BE - F/C - Dikembe Mutombo (10 minutes)
This is not going to be a pretty game. it should be low scoring, so points will be at a premium. Here is what I will do to win this game. Defense first.

Defense:

UFW has practically no front court scoring presence. Rodman and Wallace offer very little offensively, Lambieer was more of an outside shooter , and Garnett isn't really a banger inside. This should end up being a big advantage for me.

Defensively I will stick Bill Russell on Garnett. He is athletic and quick enough to stay with him. I don't see Garnett being able to do much inside with Russell on him. Whoever the other bigs are on the court, Chris Bosh, Wes Unseld or Dikembe Mutombo will guard them. If UFW goes big with Garnett, and two of the three of Rodman, Lambieer and Wallace I will counter with Russell, Bosh and Unseld with Russell guarding Garnett. With limited offense from the non Garnett bigs, Bosh and Unseld will easily hold their own defensively. Mutombo won't be needed much this game since there is little inside scoring.

The backcourt will be trouble, but I don't think it will be enough to outscore me. I will stick Havlicek on Frazier and AI on the Pearl. These guys are close to being mirror images of each other. Havlicek and Frazier were capable scorers (although Havlicek was better) and both were amazing defenders, while both AI and Monroe were dazzling scorers with quick hands but not great defensively. Both will play tight if Wallace or Rodman is in the game, but will be more lax if the frontcourt is Garnett and Lambieer. I don't mind letting them get penetration as there isn't a big inside threat and whoever is guarding Rodman or Wallace can play lax to give help. If Kerr comes in, AI will be assigned to him and if Harper comes in Havlicek, Hardaway and Bowen will get him as they are not too far apart in height.

If the UFW's go big I already explained the defensive changes. If he goes smaller with Artest or Butler at the 3, King will guard them. He wasn't a great defender but Butler and Artest aren't prolific scorers and King should make up for the lack of defense with his offense as he was a much better scorer than both.

Bowen will be brought in case Monroe or Frazier go off. He is one of the greatest perimeter defenders ever and will at the very least change up how they play.

If Redd is brought in he will guard Earl or Kerr and won't be brought in if they aren't playing. Penny Hardaway will be assigned the PG or SG depending on the other matchups, since I don't want him guarding the bigger 3's the UFW's has.

So nothing special is being done defensively. The UFW's have little inside scoring and I have great shotblocking PF's/C's. I will not allow his backcourt to shoot and at worst will force them inside to Russell or Mutombo or whoever is guarding Rodman or Wallace.

Offensively:

This game will be played differently offensively. I don't need to use my great defenders in Russell and Mutombo simultaneously because of the weak inside scoring of the UFW's. I will use Unseld and Bosh heavily this game as they won't give up much defensively but will more than make up for it offensively.

I'm not going to have a point guard per se in this game. Whoever Earl Monroe is guarding will take care of bringing the ball downcourt as I want to avoid my guys going one on one with Frazier.

If Havlicek is the one with the ball he will look for King or Bosh and Unseld inside. These guys are very capable one on one scorers but are good passers. If they don't draw a double they will do their thing and I believe in the long run will score more often than not and certainly more than who is guarding them. If they draw a double they will use their passing skills to hit the open shooters as I have Havlicek, Bowen and Redd who were all great outside shooters. Since Havlicek was such a good shooter he will also play pick and roll with Unseld and Bosh.

If AI has the ball he will play his normal game and should be able to get a lot of penetration on Monroe. Because of the great inside defense of the UFW's AI will look to hit Bosh/Unseld for layups or mid range jump shots or Bowen/Havlicek/Redd on the wings for jump shots. However I see AI being able to go basket for basket with Monroe and thus not allowing Monroe to win this game on his own.

King will be the wildcard. He is the best scorer in this game (32.9ppg in his peak season, the next best is Iverson with 31.4 and then Monroe with 25.8) as far as peak season go. If Artest is guarding him he will have a tough time, but he was skilled enough to score inside and outside and if Artest is not guarding him he should have a field day.

Penny Hardaway won't be used in this matchup a lot because I don't think he gives me any advantages in this game. Redd will be brought in as an extra outside shooter in case the UFWs go zone or if they go with a small backcourt. Bowen will be used mainly for defense but will be able to hit open threes as he has a great career % at.391.

So in review. This will be a normal basketball type offense that will rely on individual strengths more than any special system. I think this is a good idea because I have much more individual scoring talent than the opposition especially in the frontcourt.

Review:

I see me being able to win this game because while I have a great defensive frontcourt, I also have guys who can score inside too and I will use this to my advantage. The UFW's rely mainly on scoring from the backcourt and this will not come easy with tight defense by good defenders and great shot blocking ability from my frontcourt on penetration. Offensively I will play away from Frazier and look to score dependent on the strengths of my players. I believe I detailed this enough to be able to win a low scoring and hard fought game.

UFWs (1-1)

UFW GAMEPLAN

Starters

  • C - Ben Wallace (30 min - all c)
PF - Kevin Garnett (40 min - all pf)
    SF - Dennis Rodman (35 min - 27 @ sf, 8 @ pf)
    SG - Ron Artest (26 min - 12 @ sg, 14@ sf)
PG - Walt Frazier (33 min - all pg)

  • BE - Earl Monroe (22 min @ sg)
    BE - Ron Harper (22 min - 8 @ pg, 14 @ sg)
    BE - Bill Laimbeer (18 min @ c)
BE - Steve Kerr (7 min @ pg)
BE - Caron Butler (7 min @ sf)

Line-up remarks:

  • Dennis Rodman won BACK-to-BACK DPOY AWARDS playing as a SF for the Pistons in an era where he defended: Larry Bird, Scottie Pippen, Dominique Wilkins, Charlse Barkley, and Bernard King
**he also had his highest rebounding average ever as a SF **
  • Ron Harper had his best season as the star player for the Clippers where he averaged - 23 PPG, 5.6 RPG, 5 APG, 2.5 SPG & 1 BPG

  • No doubt I have the most versitile team in the tourney

OFFENSIVE STRATEGY:
As always the offense will go through Garnett seeing as he can score inside and out. The other scoring threat will be primarily Frazier and the other SG that is on the floor. We will use High pick and pop with the guards and KG(if big guard him) and/or use the Wallace and Rodman to set picks for the guards and post KG(if King guards him)

  • If Mutombo or Russell guard KG he will take them out to about 17-20 ft where the will be less effective defenders and draw a shot blocker away fromt he basket
  • If King guards KG he will take him further to the post and use his height advantage over him (6'7 over 7'0), getting king in foul trouble and/or creating double teams.
  • Monroe sole purpose is to score off the bench, he is capable of scoring 1 point per minute or very close to it (15-22pts)

DEFENSIVE STRATEGY:
we are defensive minded teams but the opposition has capable scorers in Iverson, King and Havlicek.

Iverson - its all on Frazier and he is one of the best defensive guards

King - Rodman will draw this assignment and is fast enough and can bother shots with his slight height advantage

Havlicek - Ron Artest will check him, and will be able to knock him on the arse a lil too

  • His Bench probably will not get used much but only offense is Redd and Hardaway and I have Ron Harper for either of them

As far as rebounding he has 3 great rebounders (Mutombo, Russell, Unseld) and I have 4(Rodman, Wallace, Garnett, Laimbeer) and my guards(Frazier, Harper, Artest) are better rebounders.

For those who think the UFW cant score:  here is a likely scenario

Garnett 24 + Frazier 20 + Monroe 15 + Harper 12 + Artest 9 + Laimbeer 8 + Rodman 8 + Wallace 6 = 102 pts

  • and thats not counting Kerr and Butler who play 14 minutes combined
  • plus that low balling monroe, harper and artest
Please help us out by voting and giving a reason as to why.
Voting will run for 72 hours.
Thank you.

With Rodman and Wallace in the same lineup, UFWs are basically playing a 3-on-5 offense.  Need I say more?

My vote: Hooch's Hustlers

Gathering from both gameplans, each team kind of went away from what the other expected. Russell on Garnett was a good move as nobody else on your team has the versatility to defend him. The UFW's decision to bring Garnett out with Russell on him is very
