Nick Hut of the Northwest Herald believes the Bears are not making the best decision by taking themselves out of the Kevin Jones sweepstakes.  I know many of us on here have discussed it, but Hut feels that signing Jones would be cheap insurance in the event that Forte doesn't pan out.

Behind a questionable offensive line, the Bears need as many playmakers as possible. Jones, if healthy, certainly is better than Peterson.

The Bears’ reluctance to pursue Jones stems less from cap concerns than from their utter faith in their own players. They spent months analyzing all the running backs in this year’s draft before settling on Forte, and they are confident enough in their scouting system to think they got it right.

Thoughts?

Personally, I think the Bears should wait and see what they have in Forte FIRST, before they commit to bringing unnecessary competition at the RB position.  From all that I have heard about Matt Forte, he is a hard-worker and is a very physically gifted back.  Why bring in a vet who is looking to resurrect his career-- not play second-fiddle?

I agree.

I like Forte, and he seems to have good hands coming out of the backfield, unlike that....er....other guy . I think he will have a great rookie year.

As for Peterson, I can’t see how anybody can compain about having him as our second guy. He has a ton of heart out there and even with our crappy o-line last year he still managed the same yards per attempt as.....er.....that other guy.

I for one can’t complain about our running backs. It’s the rest of the offense that I have questions about.

More or less I think the Bears are trying to avoid a situation they put themselves before.

Remember they drafted Anthony Thomas (2nd Rd offensive rookie of the year, forshadowing for Matt Forte) then they let him go and brought in a veteran, Thomas Jones, who was equally effective but ultimately it was a wasted move because there was no future with Thomas Jones so they wasted a draft pick on Cedric Benson.

I might be over simplyfing it but it does seem very similar to that  situation.  If the Bears stayed with A-Train they wouldn't have wasted money on Jones and never drafted Benson.  Now A-Train is obviously not a HOF RB but he fit the Bears gameplan.  Run the ball 30 times a game gain 80 to 120 yds.  I mean essentially he was a Cedric Benson that wanted to play football and worked at it, and didn't consider it a god-given right.

Outside of the 1st Rd I trust ALMOST every decision that Angelo has made so I think its a good idea to not stunt Forte's growth by bringing in a Veteran starter to question his ability.  No a veteran back-up, that I'm okay with.

Beside who wants someone that couldn't cut it on the Lions....

My concern is that Forte is a rookie.  Don't rookies hit a wall their first year with the 16 game schedule (plus preseason)?  I hope they keep his carries down a little early on to see if he is going to hold up at the end of year 1.

I think most of you all know how I feel about another RB but I guess yes patience is a virtue.  Do I like Forte, oh yeah ... I have him pegged in my fantasy league, but in a weird way I don't want him being like a Anthony Thomas and overused even though he got ROY, or heck looking at Larry Johnson or Priest Holmes in KC, the everyday pounding of a NFL running back is brutal ... huge transition from Tulane to the NFL.

I guess I'll wait and see how the RB's pan out honestly ... but to say Pope & Lawrence who the Bears got for the practice squad will make a impact, you never know but I long shots at best ... Adrian Peterson, Garrett Wolfe and Matt Forte will probably comprise the RB's.

Do I like a KJ or Droughns as a "just in case" RB ... yup, but let's see how the Bears RB's play this one out, it takes a lot more to a successful running game, the OL and Chris Williams needs to step it up ... heck the Passing Game with whoever a QB needs to step it up or heck we can have Walter Payton and Jim Brown back there, if teams know that there is no chance we will pass, they'll stack the line all day.   I at least have to say I like our TE's with Olsen and Clark.

Looking forward to some pre-season Bears football to see how it all shakes up ... we'll make adjustments as they go along, notice teams aren't really jumping on RB's like Jordan, Jones or even Alexander yet ... looks like their doing what the Bears are doing, wait and see.

Nice post rhd420

It seems while many clamor for this guy and that guy it takes money to keep the impact players you have. While many teams may have gifted offensive impact players our team, the needle swings the other way to the defensive side of the ball (turnovers) and in field position (special teams aka Devin Hester). Many times you have to roll the dice and gamble that your plan will work out. I do see a plan it's not glamorous but it could be effective. I think the tight ends are the key as well. Their success over the middle will open up the wide outs and thereby force teams to leave less in the box to open up the running game. If the defense can get close to the level of turnovers they had in 06 and stay healthy and the offense not give it away then I too am hopeful that we can have a successful season.

Go Bears
