And with the Marlins about to lose, the Mets will only have the Phillies ahead of them.
Hey Positive HYPE, one more loss and a mets win and you drop into 3rd place for the first time since april. I want ot hear your excuses again about them hanging around despite being 16-24 in their last 40 games. they got off to a hot start, but they have cooled down. And they had a big lead over the Mets at one point too.
So the Mets dominated Tim Lincecum, arguably the best pitcher in the NL this year. They took 3 out of 4 from the Phillies. 2 out of 4 from the Cardinals on the road.
but yet, you don't think the Mets are that good, but you think the marlins are. And for the record, their really isn't a guy who scares any pitchers in that lineup to hit a bomb besides Uggla and Ramirez. Jacobs doesn't. Cantu Doesn't. Willingham doesn't. Neither does Hermedia. The offense is overrated too because of the long balls that have been hit this year.
they just aren't that good of a baseball team and the last 40 games has shown who they really are.

I gotta say that the Mets have surprised me a bit. I didn't think that they'd get out of their doldrums even after firing Willy. The fact is, they've won a lot of big games and they're right back in the hunt knocking on the door of the NL East. Taking 3 of 4 from Philly was huge, Wagner tried to blow it but even he wasn't able to. Beating a pitcher of the caliber of Lincecum is also an accomplishment to point to....
If they can keep this up remains to be seen. But right here, right now, they've put themselves in a great position especially considering the way they were playing a mere few weeks ago.

The Braves are done. They proved last year they didn't have the fire to crush the division, and proven this year they don't have the talent (with their pitching in shambles from injury and they're hitters not carrying the team).
The most impressive part about the Mets, and perhaps the most dangerous, is the teams they've beaten. Took a series from the Angels, arguably the 2nd or 3rd best team in the AL, took a series from the Rangers, who are no slouches, then split with the Yanks and split with the Cardinals, two good teams, and then knocked the Phillies around. And they blew a few saves along the way... they might have managed to take an extra game or two with a little luck, whereas most of their wins were blowouts (even the 10-9 game I consider a blowout... should never have gotten that close).
Of course, if they get complacent, it all goes to s**t again. They need to win tonight to insure themselves the SFO series, and then take at least 2 against Colorado. With Philly playing St Louis, we have a legit shot to be in first by the break.
When the going gets tough, the tough get going. Which means the Mets win and prosper, and the Phillies collapse when faced with a strong schedule like they saw in June.
