If you eliminate the NL you might also want to require the use of steroids (we'll get more homeruns)

Hey while we're at it lets just make it the MLT (Major League T-ball) for all these people who just want to see a glorified homerun derby.

You really want to go there?  With the exception of a few, pitchers are bad hitters and could practice hitting 24/7 and it wouldn't help them.  Don't even try to compare what people do in HS to what goes on in the pros.  Some pitchers even still hit in college, but if you are going to say that there are a bunch of hidden Albert Pujolses in the rotations and bullpens of the NL, I think you're nuts.

Do you really think that a team would take a guy and use him every fifth day as a pitcher (the majority of them being average pitchers) when they could turn him into a .330/40 HR guy just by making him take extra BP?  Come on, man.  That doesn't even make a little bit of sense.

I totally see where you are going, but the point I am trying to make is not getting rid of the NL. The one dude is saying that pitchers shouldn't hit. I'm not saying that all pitchers will turn into Rick Ankiel, but what I'm trying to get across is that pitchers can hit too and that implementing the DH in the NL is wrong.

I agree with you about pitchers being good athletes but MetsFan is right, its like 5 years minimum for some of these guys. They focus so much on pitching and keeping their arms strong they don't have time to take BP. You are right that there are some pitchers like Carlos Zambrano that can hit, as well as Jason Marquis but not all can hit like that. Look at Ted Lilly: his swing is awful!!!!

But your thought process is well thought out though.

Babe Ruth was a great pitcher, but his team chose to not have him pitch because he was such a good hitter.

Part of the strategy of the NL.

Curiously about the DH if it wasn't addressed on a post that I might have overlooked here ... it was implemented in 1973 by the AL because the league was weak, had no hitting stars and was losing attendance. That's not conjecture. That's the stated truth.

It seems this thread has been to "eliminate the NL" because it's weak.
I guess the league doesn't see it that way because it still doesn't use the DH.

My question is: What's so wrong with the DH?
Purists say it takes out the strategy.
Oh, you mean the double switch? (an effective substitute for the DH)
Or the sac bunt? (Maybe if you're lucky it happens once a game.)
It's also not about pitching changes. All starters go 6 innings or 110 pitches, all leagues, all day, all season.

The DH is not evil.
It isn't necessary, but it's not evil.

If we wait long enough, what goes around comes around.
Always did.
Always will.

And ALL PITCHERS hit better than Corey Patterson does.

I hear ya.  When a guy like Rick Ankiel comes along (or Babe Ruth, for that matter), it really opens everyone's eyes.  And I totally agree that adding the DH to the NL would be a mistake.

Here's an interesting question that I had never considered before.  If the AL had the DH in the early 20th Century, does anyone ever think about Babe Ruth as being anything other than an above average pitcher for Boston?  Who knows, and I am not trying to suggest that there is another Babe Ruth pitching in the AL, but it's an interesting question to think about.

Also, if Rick Ankiel had pitched in the AL, would he be out of baseball now?  Probably not, since checking his stats, there wasn't a lot there to suggest that he'd be a power hitting if he played full time.  But who knows?  My guess is that there are some pitchers who can hit (
