Umm to be honest I didn't even know Arkansas State's mascot was an Indian until I read these posts.  But really people when is enough enough with this kind of petty stuff?  It's a freaking mascot.  Who cares?  Is it really offensive that a university would want to represent the native Americans by choosing their name over say, a Tiger or a Lion.  If it was misrepresenting the Indian and basically spitting on their culture then we could have issues with that.  When is this being politically correct crap going to stop?  Everyone is so worried that you can't say this or that.  But you know what?  You can say what you want.  This is America and we are given that right.  You just have to be able to deal with the response of the things you say.  Until then, Good Luck Arkansas State Indians...errr.  Red Wolves I mean.

Why not ask the vast majority of Native Americans about how they feel about their names, signs and symbols being used for sports teams-each a form of simulated warfare? We're not talking about the "screaming Mimis" minority who also think "manhole" covers are offensive, the word "seminar" is sexist and their ilk.

The Native Americans, as I understand it, are not opposed to respectful depictions of the symbols from their ancestors, but are opposed to the hackneyed caricatures and stereotype-driven mishmash. The tribes near DC, I hear, are not opposed to the Redskins, because the logo on the helmet is a dignified looking amalgam of the local tribes.

The Seminoles, as I understand it, have a good relationship with the Florida State administration.

In other words, the NCAA hierarchy should keep their noses out of areas where they don't belong. Let the individual schools speak with nearby tribal representatives and deal with the issue locally on a case by case basis.

You are kind of correct sumodave.  The NCAA has allowed native names, logos and mascots to stay with schools that have been given approval by that native race of that region.  The Sioux tribe of North Dakota, the Seminole tribes of Florida as well as the Illini of Illinios, were all honored to have their names lending to logo's of schools in their region.  These were not offensive names to the tribes and the NCAA, after seeking approval of these tribes allowed them to stay.  The word "Indian" is a highly offensive, incorrect, derragotory term and should not be used in any sport.  You are also wrong about the Redskins.  Most, not all, but most native tribes are in deed offended by the Redskins logo as are they of the Braves and Indians and have called for the names to be changed.

Barbrawler, I normally stay away from these types of post, but I happen to know that Native Americans are HIGHLY offended by the term Indian.  It is highly offensive, derragotory and it shames a proud culture.  In fact the term "Indian" carries the same hurtful power of other derragtory ethnic names including the N word for blacks and other insensitve callings of an ethnicity.  You really should be more educated on the subject you post on.  It isn't just a name and trust me, there is an entire race of people that care.  You were not given a right as an American to degrade other people.  This word is a symbol just as the N word is, to the stripping of humanity, culture, and liberty of a proud people.  Everyone was granted inallienable rights in our constitution and unwritten trues of society is that each person deserves to be treated with respect and dignity.
