I think he is being a bit selfish. At 82, you are just too old to keep up with the times. Hell, at 82 you are too old to do a lot of things.  At this point Penn St should go ahead and name the sucessor but  let Jo coach one more year.  Even though he is too old I beleive that this is the best way to counteract the yr or two it takes to adjust to the new coach and his system. Name the successor and bring him in as an asst and slowly progress from there. I think FSU did it right!!

I appreciate your post, and I'm not attacking any of your statements.  I do, however, wish to comment that in my opinion, JoPa and selfish should never be used in the same sentence.  Please keep in mind that this man donated a significant amount of $$ back to the university for the new library.  I'm also a little reluctant to agree w/ statements about him being too old.  I was furious when the "expert" commentators were making comments a year or two ago about JoPa being too old and needing to step down.  I think he silenced them quickly w/ solid recruiting and bowl appearances.  He was also pretty impressive running down the official on the field!!!  The man has been a great source of inspiration, not only to his players, students, and the university, but nationwide.  Given the number of years he has dedicated to Penn State, as well as the values he has instilled in so many student-athletes, I'd say the man has earned every bit of respect he receives from the community and other coaches.

The last pair of shoes I'd ever want to be in are the Prez's at PSU!

yes you are right!!  There really is nothing negative you could ever say about him and I shouldnt have used selfish. I just think that it is time for him to step down. I think it is time for Bowden to step down. These two will be remembered as some of the greatest coaches in history. I just think that the times have changed and maybe Penn St needs younger blood. I guess the main point of my post was to comment on how FSU did it right by naming the successor b/f Bowden retires. It helps with the adjustment and also helps the recruiting aspect b/c it allows the recruits to know who there coach will be. Penn St may be losing recruits b/c everyone knows that JoePa will retire soon and if I were a top recruit and wanted to go to Penn St to play for him and knew he would retire in a year I would probably go somewhere else. But like I said he is a great coach and will go out on top whenever he decides to retire.  He is a class act!!

of all the people to choose a new successor... don't you think that one of the greatest coaches ever would be best for that job??

i don't possibly see how they won't let him choose
