Looks like we've got another guard on the roster.  Devin Bawinkel transferred from West Virginia where he played sparingly as a freshman.

I like our possible starting five for next year:

PG-Peterson
SG-Freeman
SG-Gatens
PF-Tate
PF-Cole

But our bench is all guards right now except the Brommer kid from MN, and the bio on him says he's a good outside shooting big man.  So probably not a bruiser and more of the Butler big man variety.  At any rate, Bawinkel seems like a decent pick up despite the lack of beef on the bench.

Go Hawks.

Scratch Tony Freeman. Johnny who's our next contestant?

Did Coach Lickliter run a decent kid out of town or did he get rid of a malcontent that wasn't going to work to fit into the new philosophy?

I just read through two Rivals.com articles and neither really said what Freeman's reasoning was for leaving, but that it was Freeman who asked for his release. It did say there was constant friction between Lickliter and Freeman during games so that could be a reason why. It would have to be some kind of rift for a kid to leave a guard-happy offense for his senior season.

Probably a good thing. Let's let Lickliter start from scratch and see what he can do.

You know, I wonder if Steve Alford left Iowa because he knew that there was going to be a downturn for Hawkeye basketball as a result of his recruiting (lack of) success?

It looks less and less like a spur of the moment decision to head to UNM.

If so, we Iowa fans have seen it before. Hayden Fry left the cupboard extremely bare for Ferentz and his coaching staff when he left. Tom Davis was one of the only ones who came into either of our programs with top talent at every position. That just shows how horrible of a coach George Raveling was.

of corse alford knew is was coming, he was the reason for it.  he was a joke to iowa basketball.  i loved when he said that when he came to iowa it was a football school.  I remember the basketball team was coming off a sweet sixteen, and i think the football team had 1 win, yeah that is definity a football school.

Just a little input, Alford and Ferentz came in the same year.  The 1 win was Ferentz's first, so Alford was already here.  But, I still get your rationale.  I remember also that the talk at the time of them coming was that many believed Alford would stay longer.  Well, I guess that was off base -- and I wish he would have left a lot sooner.  I was really hoping he would have left for Indiana after Knight left.  Oh well, water under the bridge, and all that.  Hopefully Lickliter can get some quality kids in here and do some good.

Devin Bawinkel and JaMatt Gatens will be Iowa's two pleasant surprises through the year.  Also, Jarryd Cole is going to be great.  Look for him to be in the running for the Big Ten Player of the Year during his senior season.
