Just a question. I seem to remember a lot of huge hype players not really doing anything. Look at all of Notre Dames QBs they get. (I'll give you Brady Quinn but he was shaky at best). Hype seems to get these guys. I remember when Ted Ginn Jr. was gonna be the best WR of all time. Penn State had a kid that was highly recruited recently too, what happened to him??? The best players seem to come out of nowhere. What are your thoughts??

I think you need to read Micheal Lewis' analysis of Lemming's scouting in The Blind Side of the Game.
That will tell you that of the top 20 recruits according to Lemming each year, 10 become first round draft picks on average. That's an astonishingly accurate statistic when you consider how many high school football recruits there are.
The other 10 will be lost to injury, off the field incidents or poor performances but with very few are they overhyped. Ginn was projected to be the best receiver in his class by Lemming and he ended up being so because Calvin Johnson and he weren't from the same recruiting class. Taking any given high school player and projecting if they will be an NFL star is very hard, but Lemming does a very good job of projecting those players who will reach the NFL. The fact Miami was appalling last year shouldn't detract from the fact that Ginn was the 9th pick overall. As far as being overhyped, that's the problem of the media looking for the next Peyton Manning, Tom Brady, LT or AP - it doesn't necessarily reflect on the scouting
The best players don't come out of nowhere. A few do, but it is more likely that you haven't looked deep enough down Lemming's top 100 list. Almost every player drafted will have featured in Lemming's top 1500 player guide or have been interviewed by Lemming.

You always hear about the hype players that fizzled out because it was unexpected. When a great player does live up to expectations they don't make a story out of it.
Ted Ginn set the Big Ten record for return touchdowns. He was a top 10 pick coming out of college as a WR. I don't believe that's considered a bust for his college career. He's only had one year in the NFL, don't give up on him already.
Brady Quinn, a bust? He rewrote the Notre Dame record books, and as anyone can see, carried his college football team on his back. He's only had one year in the league, and everyone knows that the Browns would not hesitate to start him if they get a high 1st for Anderson.
The WR you are mentioning that went to Penn St. would be Derrick Williams out of Maryland. He hasn't lived up to expectations, but he could potentially be drafted just from his blazing speed.

#1 Shaky at best doesn't get you drafted in the first round.
#2 If I'm not mistaken Teddy Ginn Jr. was a highly touted defensive back coming out of h.s. so I'm pretty sure you made that up.

How did I make that up. He was a highly recruited player. As a reciever he wasn't that great. I don't even think he was the best on his own team. As an NFL player he did nothing at all in his rookie year. That is all I said. Nothing made up....

miamivice82, I believe he was referring to the fact that you said Ginn was supposedly going to be the best receiver of all time.
In terms of some people here, they don't consider Ted Ginn a bust at all. He was a quarterback in high school, with most colleges looking at him as a cornerback. He was converted to wide receiver, where he went on to set a Big Ten season and career records for return touchdowns.
In 3 years as a Buckeye he was a 1st team All-American and a 2nd team All-American. No Ohio State fans consider him a bust in college, but most would agree that he was selected too high at #9.

Uhm, great examples.Ginn was the 10th pick in the NFL draft, and Quinn was the first quarterback taken. Quinn shakey? He holds most of the all time quarterback records for one of the most storied college programs in history. Ginn had a great rookie year and Quinn rode the pine as most rookie qb's do. I guess they needed to go higher?

I wouldn't say Ginn had a great rookie year, pretty slow. But the top players normally do pan out. Look at the QB down in florida, ummm Tebow maybe? He's turned out pretty well. IT's all about how they are used. Clausen did bad at ND but they had no line what so ever. Wright did bad at Miami b/c it's not the same Miami as eight years ago. This PRyor kid could be good and the fact that he doesn't have to play immediately is even better for him.

LSU QB Jamarcus Russell was taken #1 overall which would make him a higher draft pick than Quinn.
