Moneyball to money.  Epstein is taking Billy's theory to a high expenditure market n Boston.  Theo has been amazing and the Yankees are finally realizing overpaying has-beens is not the answer.  I think the new Steinbrenner will get impatient and barter those minor league prospects to get the fad-player of the day when push comes to shove.  The best thing the Sox did was get Theo back into the front office.

"get impatient and get the fad-player of the day"

were you talking about Edgar Rentaria of '06? or J.D. Drew of '07? or Julio Lugo of '07? or maybe it was Eric Gagne to bulster the Boston pen the end of last year....

Theo has been a God-send to the RedSox organization but the RedSox blow money and trade players just as much as the Yankees do.  Sometimes it works...Beckett, Lowell, Schilling, Pedro other times it blows up in your face pavano, igawa, farnsworth, and giambi.

But to make it seem like the Red Sox don't overpay for for players or trade away young talent is a farce.  Hanley Ramirez has proven the Sox trade away the freat young prospects too.  And dumping 100mil into Dice-K proves they are willing to shell out the dough just as much as the Yankees have done in the past.

Nobody suggested the Sox don't spend money.  Any transaction in baseball is a risk, and high-priced ones are very public risks.  The Sox have demonstrated a commitment to developing talent in recent years, though.  It's widely thought here (Boston) that the flap between Epstein and Lucchino centered around whether to hoard young talent or swap it, and the trade that sent Hanley to Florida occured during the period in which Epstein was out.  Now he's back, and the policy seems to be, don't trade your best prospects easily.

It remains to be seen whether the Yankees ownership is committed to developing talent in the same way.  That seems to be the way Cashman wants it, and he undoubtedly has more control over those decisions during this period of ownership transition.  Will it continue over the next couple of years?  I don't think we have a basis to know.

BTW, Renteria is a tremendous shortstop, just not in Boston.  And both Lugo and Drew deserve another year to show what they can do on the big stage.

Are you kidding me?  The Yankees were developing talent and great talent long before the BoSox.  Maybe you have forgotten the names of Bernie Williams, Jeter, Rivera, Pettite, Posada, and lately Cano and Wang.  All those guys came through the Yankees minors and the first 5 were intregal parts of the World Championships in the 90's.  Sure the Yankees traded away minor league prospects at the trading deadline those years to get guys like Cone or Paul O'neil but I don't recall too many prospects the Yankees have traded away that have turned into talents like Hanley.  We traded away Soriano to get A-Rod and Ted Lilly to get Jeff Weaver but even Lilly was years away from producing consistently at the time.  What other top prospects have teh Yankees really traded away? Dioner Navarro? Ruben Rivera?  Nick Johnson? JT Snow? The Yankees are still near the top in developing talent and talking the marginal prospects up only to trade them away.  They have held on to the ones that will become real superstars and paid them to keep them in the organization.

I never said renteria, drew, or lugo were bad players...even gagne had his day.  All i meant to say was he Sox had a great SS in Orlando Cabrera but he wasn't as flashy as renteria, so instead of keeping a guy that had proven he could perform both offensively and defensively they went after the "fad" player.  when he didn't work they went after the next "fad" in Lugo.  the JD drew signing was just throwing money at someone who could get put on the DL getting the morning paper.

The Sox have a good core of young players in pedroia, papelbon, ellsbury, Delcarmen, and maybe even Lester and Clay.  But to make it seem like you've been developing talent the last 10 years is totally silly.  The WS team of 2004 was 'bought' and put together more then any of the Yankees Championship teams.  Before this latest crop of young talent the last group in the majors was Greenwell, Ellis Burks, Roger Clemens and Mo Vaughn.
