Yeah, for 90 games in 1980--52 of which were losses. Nothing against him, I'm just saying that this ain't exactly something to hang your hat on. How about "Angels executive" or "Former Padres' skipper" (the team with which he had his longest managerial tenure) or "Former Astros' skipper" (where he earned his best single-season record)? Was the story broken by the Chicago Tribune?
That out of the way, he's clearly a great baseball-guy, and I wish him a speedy recovery.
But the AP needs to get their collective head out of their collective arse. Just because the Cubs have a bigger fan base than the other three teams combined doesn't make them more important in everyone else's eyes, much less Preston Gomez's.
