Excellent post, lifelongBEAR. Seriously, I learned all this press stuff playing elementary school basketball through the Glendale YMCA. But, you know, it works!

Keys to the Xavier game include a "less than 10 turnover" performance, and a cumulative guard foul-total less than 10. Last night our threesome had 13--13!--fouls. Inexcusable, sloppy, reactionary basketball.

Keefe was huge. Westbrook and Mbah a Moute improved markedly from last weekend's TAMU game--though Luc still looks a bit rusty (four traveling violations in two games?!).

However, despite KLove's dependable clutch performance, Shipp was the secret key to victory last night. Is the slump over? 5-9 shooting and 6 from beyond the arc should give us hope.

It's kinda weird to be the "hated program" in this year's tourney. Florida played that role last year. Oh yeah, that's right--they won it all!

mnbuirn - thanks for the kudos - sadly most people on here take it as me being some know-it-all (which I'm not). For the most part, press breaking basics is a lost art in college hoops.

The Bruins can win and turn the ball over more than 10 times - but when you turn the ball over on a failed press break the points for the other team are scored with much more ease. And I know that Howland prefers other teams to have to scrape hard and earn every single point.

oh yeah - one other point about press breaking (and this applies to any time you're on offense):

Even if you are slightly scared/ in panic mode - DON"T SHOW IT! Defenses smell fear, they feast on it, it causes defenders to swarm the ball handlers and potential pass receivers a lot faster. It fuels the intensity of the pressure on their press.

Yeah, when breaking a press stay cool (even little things like claiming your space immediately via use of the pivot foot when holding the ball and not dribbling) - at least in the defender's eyes. Even better than cool - be the agressor if possible.

mnbruin, great job of showing how to break the press. You are a wise owl.

um, actually it was I who explained how to break a press, actually not specifically. Those were press breaking no no's that I mentioned.

The set up to break a press varies from team to team coach to coach and opponent to opponent :).
