We had heard alot this season about Scott Martin wanting to transfer but he just made it official
http://purdue.rivals.com/content.asp?CID=795730
This hurts. He was a good, versatile player. I think he struggled with his shot this year but I thought he would be good for at least 12ppg next year. We probably will need to consider a JUCO now and everyone else will need to step up.

I'm not really sure how this is a good career move for Martin. While he wasn't guaranteed playing time here, it was awfully likely he'd get quite a bit. I get the feeling maybe he wanted to stand out more on his team, and on a team that's so well-rounded he couldn't really do that unless he became a great shooter. The question now is, where will he go? He strongly considered IU before signing with us...that would be interesting.
We'll have to have a couple guys step up without him, as it makes us a little less deep, but we were already an extremely deep team. We'll be just fine without him.

I agree, we'll be fine without him. If you look at our youth and the fact he plays the same position as Hummel, it's possible Martin would not be a starter until his senior year, and I think that sums up why he is transferring. I don't know where he would go, so much was made of him being homesick this year, and he was only an hour and a half from home. I doubt that IU is a possibility though, to transfer in-conference you have to pay your own way. I know nothing about the financial situation of his family, but with the cost of college today who would want to pay for it when your kid can get a full ride? My guess is he will wind up at either Valpo or a high mid-major.

Boiler folks,
I'm an IU fan and I was so surprised by this news that I got on your page to hear the inside info. Didn't Martin and Hummer come as a package deal, having played together for so long? Every Purdue game I saw last year featured that story. I'm amazed that he'd want to leave his buddy, but from what I read here, maybe that was actually the problem.
I doubt he'd come to IU with the clustermess the Hoosiers are in, but Crean will definitely have some scholarships available! Sampson left a big mess; other people get to clean it up. Maybe Martin would go to Butler or some place similar?
Looking forward to the IU-Purdue rivalry getting back to the glory days of Gene and Bob!

He's going to Valpo. The rumor is to be closer to his girlfriend.

I like how he says this is the best move for his basketball career. BS, he isn't going to get on a team that is going to have more success than Purdue.

Hummel and Martin were never a package deal, it was said many times that they never talked about going to the same school for sure, but it would been nice. As for going to IU or any other Big Ten School, he did say that he isn't considering any other B10 school in the NWTIMES, but even if he was he wouldn't/couldn't be on scholarship because of conference rules that says you can't go from one school to another in the Big Ten and be on a athletic scholarship. He would have to pay his own way.

I could see this coming, even before the Tourney I was telling people, that Martin might transfer. I have no insight on him, but just his dimeanor was different than what it was in the early part of the season. I don't believe that his heart was in West Lafayette, and I believe that it is a great move for him. Playing with heart is what the game is about, and if he wants to be close to home where his heart is then let it be. He will be a great go to guy, for what ever team he goes to, and Valpo needs one of those guys. Good luck Martin.
Boiler UP!

Too bad that Scott's leaving the program. It seems screwy to me though. It's not like Valparaiso is that far from West Lafayette. The Boilers' future seems very bright, I'm having a tough time seeing this as a great move for him. I suppose it makes sense if he gets more pt and spotlight playing for Valpo, but it looks to me like the Boilers actually have a shot at a championship over the next 3 or 4 seasons. Can't say the same for Valparaiso I think.

It's understandable for a player like Martin to want to transfer. He wasnt getting the best minutes but that's just because the team was so balanced. That's a good thing. For him personally he feels he shoudl go somewhere else. Where ever he goes, that school will have a gem. Any freshman averaging almost 9 ppg and as versitile as he is, he's going to be a definite factor for whoever he plays for. What doesn't make any sense is why he would want to leave Robbie Hummel. They've been playing together since they were little grade schoolers.

What doesn't make any sense is why he would want to leave Robbie HummelI think it makes perfect sense actually. In high school, it was the Scott Martin show........Hummel feeding Martin. This year, Hummel got all the press.........personally, I think Martin didn't like that he would be playing second fiddle to him.
There can be as many stories about him wanting to be close to home and his girlfriend and all..........but the backwoods story that I'm hearing from some Purdue students is that Martin thought he was going to be the main attraction, and his dad thought so too.......when that wasn't the case, he opted out with the nudging of his father.
I've been around Indiana high school basketball all my life.......to me, there is one of these kids on every team........thinks he should be the star, and gives up and goes somewhere else when that doesn't happen.
Whatever, I don't think it hurts us very much.......if Ryne Smith steps up and makes shots. Sure, it was nice to have a 6'8'' guy doing it, but all in all, not as bad as it sounds.

The word is, Martin has narrowed his choices down to Valpo, Notre Dame, and Butler. Maybe its just me, but Notre Dame and Butler don't seem a lot closer to Valparaiso than Purdue, but whatever. Good Luck Scott.

Imagine that, it wasn't about being closer to home after all.
Well, right about now, I'm happy we got a guy who obviously is about himself off a team that could only be hurt by a guy who is a cancer. Happy trails Scott.......and screw you.
