Sorry for the lengthy rant but this drives me crazy. Any argument against a playoff system is ridiculous except that the Big 10 and Pac 10 are greedy and don't want to find out who the best team is because it won't be one of them (except possibly USC).
A meaningless game between Ohio St and Michigan at the end of the season? Are you serious? And even if that was true, isn't that better than a meaningless BCS bowl game? If there are only 4 playoff spots and you lose your last game it would take a crazy set of circumstances for that loss not to hurt your chances of making the playoffs so I don't see how that game is meaningless.
The lack of ad revenue? Are they seriously saying they don't think they'd find someone to sponsor playoff games, even though the article makes the point that the NCAA bowl games are huge money-makers and that ABC/ESPN would love to get them back? Doesn't make sense.
They think there will be more controversy by having more teams in a playoff? How many people actually care who just missed the NCAA basketball tournament once the tournament gets going? No one because the teams that actually deserve a shot at the title are there. The more playoff teams means less controversy, not more controversy.
The Big 10 and Pac 10 (except USC) are afraid that if they actually have to win a game against a good team to play in a national title game they will never get there because those conferences are completely overrated (except USC). They end their regular season a week earlier than the other conferences and don't even play a conference title game because you have a better shot of going the the BCS championship on reputation alone the less games you play against good teams. And then they know that they will get an undeserved dump truck full of money for automatically going to the boring Rose Bowl game no matter how many other, better teams deserve to be in a BCS game.(Illinois?!?) They have no respect for the fans.
Meanwhile the SEC and Big 12 teams have to go through a murderer's row of quality conference rivals to figure out who wins the real conferences and only occasionally will a team from those conferences actually go to the BCS championship game because someone like Ohio St wins 11 games against awful competition and then embarrasses themselves in the national title game year after year. Everyone knows that the SEC and Big 12 would destroy the Big 10 and Pac 10 but all the Big 10 and Pac 10 care about is getting a bigger share of a smaller piece of the pie.
Unfortunately for the Big 10 and Pac 10 they don't care what the fans want because they want to protect their own at the expense of the game. You know what you get when you put together greed at the expense of the game, undeserving title contenders, no transparency in deciding who gets a shot at the title and ignoring what fans want? You get boxing. That's where the BCS is headed.
