I agree. You can call me a crazy Suns fan, but I truely think that Kerr was looking out for his old team by bringing Shaq to the Suns. He allowed the Spurs to play their style instead of forcing them to play small and adjust to the Suns style. In the past the Spurs had to rise to the occasion and find a way to edge out the Suns, but this year they simply had to play their game and show the Suns why they are so much better at it.
Cheezeyhead - the Suns not playing small ball had nothing to do with them losing to the Spurs - the Spurs always have been able to play small up tempo ball when needed. They're great because they can play well at almost any tempo and they adjust pretty quickly.
Not preventing Parker from getting to the lane was the backbreaker for the Suns. Without a 2nd good perimeter defender with Hill hurt the Suns had to put Nash on Parker so Bell (their only other good perimeter defender) could guard Ginobili.
The Suns need 1-2 more guys in their regular rotation - it's just stupid having only 7-8 guys play in the playoffs when guys get tired as a series goes on and the other team plays 10+ players. I love D'Antoni, but this 7-8 man rotation thing over the last few years makes zero sense. They need one more QUALITY big guy due to fouls (and Brian Skinner isn't quality) and another decent perimeter defender who's also decent on offense.
Hopefully they can afford those 2 additions with Shaq's massive salary!
As a Suns fan of 20+ years I am fed up with the run n gun. It's been fun but ultimately frustrating.
Think about the philosophy behind run n gun. You are getting easier buckets - true. But the other team is getting more possessions. When you get to the highest levels of the nba giving the other team more possessions has prooven too dangerous.
Steve Kerr believes in the defensive style that has been proven to win championships. Getting Shaq was a defensive move that stopped the bleeding on the boards. I believe Kerr will do what it takes to shore up the rest of the defense.
I believe run n gun can work, with the right players...Hasn't D'Antoni been preaching that for years? Remember, last year the Suns were 2 bogus suspensions away from probably beating the Spurs and likely winning the championship.
Once they traded Marion for Shaq, all bets were off since Shaq can't play that style. As I said, I believe the Suns were better last year.
Shaq did not kill the Suns run n gun game at all. Suns actually had more fast break opportunities because of Shaq than any time before during the regular season. That did not show in the Spurs series because Hill - one of the Suns quickest breakers - was out and the Spurs are excellent at slowing the break down.
I have faith that Steve Nash given training camp and a full season can work around Shaq and that style in tact. But by the Conference Finals (or even the semis) these guys will break down.
That's the biggest problem I have with that style. Look at the history - when the Suns made it deep into the playoffs with that style guys broke down. Joe Johnson, Raja Bell, Cedric Ceballos, Kevin Johnson, Grant Hill. Would Stat have needed knee surgery if he played a slower style? Not sure - maybe.
But I do know that in the marathon that the nba is that style does not lend itself to the stamina needed to go the distance.
