The Bucs just got Jason Michaels from the Indians for a 'player to be named'. The tribe is also picking up most of his 2.2 mil in salary. They sent down Nyjer Morgan to AAA to get more ABs.
I personally think this is a good move. Nyjer was getting stale here and Michaels is a player that is good as a backup and also a positive influence in the clubhouse.
What do you guys think?
GO BUCS!!

It's not a terrible move. It's a positive move unlike the past owners have done. I would like to see them go after a middle infielder or 3rd basemen rather than an outfielder. The farm system is stocked with outfielders. Speaking of that, i hope it's not Steve Pearce or AC that leaves.

I think it makes sense to send Nyjer Morgan down so he gets regular at bats, but I can't say I'm thrilled with the addition of Micahaels. Defensively I think he is ok. He can play the entire outfield, but he doesn't really offer any offense. Is this a good move? I don't think we can really answer the question until we hear how much of his salary the Tribe are picking up.

pgh: I like it because at least it leads NH to the team that is the most able to satisfy our future needs if and when they decide they need to get a strong corner OF bat in their lineup which cannot score runs. I have been a regular reader of their message board because I think they will call for Nady, either now or later, and they have a young SS at Hi A (Rivero) and a LH hitting, excellent fielding 1B (Head) at AA.
If you read their board they have been roasting the GM since they made the trade to get Michaels. Michaels has not done anything worthwhile to stop the complaints, especially because Cleveland has their own McCutcheon-like OF in Ben Francisco, who had a VG Spring and then got sent down for "seasoning" at AAA. He is now at Cleveland after only 2 months. I am not a big fan of adding more deadwood at a position where we need to break the logjam in the minors and start getting these guys to the majors. McC, Pearce, Thompson, Boone, Corley, Delaney, Pacheco, and if I am not way off, the "Q", Quincy Latimore will be on a fast track very similar to McCutcheon.
That said, he is a better utility OF than Nyjer Morgan, and may be worth something as a throw-in in a trade later this year. However, Nyj can steal a base and is a LH hitter - Michaels is another RH in a LH friendly ballpark. This is definitely a head scratcher at best.

I like the move. Bay-McLouth-Nady through yesterday had the best statistics for any outfield in the major leagues. (That was fun writing that sentence by the way) Morgan, while 27 is still considered a "prospect" due to his potential. He clearly was not handling the very limited playing time that he was getting. I see Michaels as nothing more than a stop-gap player that will be gone after this season. To be honest, I don't know much about him, but I did look at his numbers. My first thought after looking at them was this is a steady average outfielder who can handle coming off the bench and give the starters a breather when needed. With all of that said, I still don't see how Morgan fits into the future of this team. WIth Pearce and McCutcheon waiting in the wings and McLouth imitating a young Barry Bonds Morgan has no position to play. I'm guessing that they want him to get more playing time in case of an injury?

I agree, I like it. Let Morgan get some AB's? get another decent bat off the bench.
I'm telling you, at least this front office is trying! Letting go of Morris, Calling up Burnett, and now this. They are definitely giving us some optimism.

Even though Michaels brings experience and quality at bats to the team, I do not understand how Nyjer could still be considered a prospect at age 27/28. I like his ability to lead off or steal a base late in games when it is 3-3 in the 8th or 9th inning. He is also a game changing defensive player. If I were a pitcher for the Bucs, I sure would feel alot more comfortable with a section of the outfield coined as "Morgantown"
The Bucs really have no speed on the bench now. I just think at age 27/28, if it were me, I'd rather contribute to the Major League club occasionally, rather than play everyday with the youngsters in AAA.

I don't know if I agree with the post about Michaels not bringing offense. I believe there were two years recently that he batted over .300 with the Phillies, so he has the ability to hit well. They may have brought him on board to provide experience on the bench.
My question now is, what about this rumor of Nady to the Mets for Ryan Church? Does that make any sense?

I'm not sure why we would trade Xavier Nady for Ryan Church. It doesn't make a whole lot of sense since we have Pearce in AAA who we are looking to bring along. I think we need a future SS in a trade for Nady not another outfielder.
