The Pittsburgh Post-Gazette reports that the Pirates placed C Ryan Doumit on the 15-day DL Wednesday with a fractured thumb and called up C Raul Chavez from Triple-A. (Updated 05/14/2008).

Fantasy Analysis
Doumit was smoking hot at the plate before getting injured, and his absence will be felt in many Fantasy leagues over at least the next couple of weeks. Chavez is known more for his defensive ability than his bat (.212 career average in the minors), and he will only back up Ronny Paulino in Pittsburgh. He should be ignored in all Fantasy formats, unless Paulino ends up getting hurt too. (Updated 05/14/2008).

Advice
Doumit was placed on the 15-day disabled list on Wednesday after an examination in Pittsburgh, confirmed the break. Surgery will not be necessary for the team's top offensive player in the early part of the season. The switch-hitter is batting .350 with five homers and 15 RBIs and had settled in the cleanup spot. Backup Ronny Paulino, the regular last year while making a career-high 119 starts, slides into the starting spot.
