Penny back on 15-day DL Thursday: Opening-day starter Brad Penny was placed on the 15-day disabled list by the Los Angeles Dodgers on Thursday - a day after being pounded for six runs and six hits in three innings by the Philadelphia Phillies. The 30-year-old right-hander had been sidelined from June 14 until last Friday night because of tendinitis in his right shoulder. He gave up one run in five innings at San Francisco in his first start after coming off the disabled list, but his second outing was a different story. "Brad got a shot and I believe won't try and throw again for five days," manager Joe Torre said. "He had an MRI. I have no idea when he will be able to come back. We've been trying to get this thing well. He's had some rest. He's still got some shoulder strength. It's something that's been nagging him. It's more frustrating for him than anybody else."

Penny, 16-4 with a 3.03 ERA in 33 starts last season, is 6-9 with a 6.05 ERA in 17 starts this year. "Our first concern is the bullpen, that's the first priority," Torre said. "We'll take the this next day or so to try and make a plan. We'll probably skip Penny's spot with the off day (Monday). It's not a certainty. You like to give guys the extra day when possible this time of year. Whoever is ready and rested the next time we need a start would get the call." Penny won't be back until September at this point and it might finally be time to start cutting ties with the man.
