Gordon likely out for season: According to The Sports Xchange notes: A diagnosis by noted orthopedist Lewis Yocum confirmed the Phillies' fears about Tom Gordon. Gordon's season is finished. The Phillies' 40-year-old setup man had his balky right elbow examined by Yocum on Tuesday in Los Angeles. Yocum agreed with team physician Michael Ciccotti's diagnosis Gordon's ulnar collateral ligament is damaged. Gordon also has an injury to the flexor pronator muscle group on the inside of his elbow, irritation to his ulnar nerve and a small piece of bone that has pulled away from his medial epicondyle. Yocum gave Gordon two options: surgery or rehab, which Gordon chose. He will be in a brace for three weeks before seeing Ciccotti again, making it highly unlikely he will be able to pitch again this season. If Gordon undergoes an operation, it would be Tommy John surgery, a procedure that includes a 12-month rehabilitation period. Gordon had Tommy John surgery in 1999.

Gordon is in the final season of a three-year, $18 million contract. The Phillies have a $4.5 million club option with a $1 million buyout for 2009, but it's difficult to imagine they wouldn't take the buyout. It's conceivable that Gordon, a 20-year major league veteran, won't pitch again. "I hate to lose Flash," manager Charlie Manuel said. "He was one of the big parts of our bullpen, and keeping him healthy was something we definitely needed to do. We're going to miss him, but somebody has to step up and do his job. I hate that he's done for the season. This gives him a chance to take care of his arm and get healthy. It's up to him to decide what he wants to do. I think he'll pitch again if he wants to because he has tremendous work ethic and loves the game." Cut and ignore the setup man and former closer in all Fantasy leagues now.

Gordon will see Dr. Lewis Yocum on Monday for a second opinion on his injured right elbow, and could be facing Tommy John surgery. (Updated 08/08/2008)

Gordon is trying to recover from elbow inflammation that placed him on the disabled list July 6. He pulled himself from a rehabilitation assignment at Class-A Clearwater on Wednesday, when he experienced discomfort after pitching to just two batters. Yocum performed elbow ligament replacement surgery on Gordon in 1999. "Right now we aren't optimistic that he will (pitch this year),'' Phillies trainer Scott Sheridan said.
