Mariners' Mateo to be activated at Triple-A Friday

ST. PETERSBURG, Fla. -- Seattle Mariners pitcher Julio Mateo, who was arrested and charged with assault earlier this month after a dispute with his wife, will be activated from the Triple-A inactive list Friday.

Mateo will report to Triple-A Tacoma on Thursday and will be available to pitch Friday. He pitched simulated games Monday and Wednesday at the Mariners' spring training complex in Arizona.

The 6-foot, 220-pound right-hander was arrested in New York following a dispute at a Manhattan hotel on May 5. He was charged with third-degree assault, posted bond and was released. Police said his wife needed five stitches to her mouth.

Seattle optioned him to the minors on May 5 and suspended him for 10 days without pay for missing the May 5 game against the Yankees. When his suspension was over, Seattle he put him on the Triple-A inactive list.

The team, in a statement Wednesday, said Mateo "has continued to voluntarily work with his counselor, and the Mariners have been advised by her that he is working diligently and is ready to be returned to the work environment.
