Rangers designate 1B Broussard for assignment

SEATTLE (AP) -The Texas Rangers designate first baseman Ben Broussard for assignment Thursday, one of four roster moves by the team.

Broussard, a seven-year veteran, was the Rangers' Opening Day starter at first.

Before their game with the Mariners, the Rangers activated left-hander Kason Gabbard from the disabled list to start the game. Infielder Travis Metcalf (left hamstring tear) also came off the DL. He'd been sidelined since spring training with a left hamstring tear.

The Rangers optioned left-hander A.J. Murray back Triple-A Oklahoma City.

Broussard, a Texas native who was acquired in a Dec. 12 trade with the Mariners, batted .159 with three home runs and eight RBI in 26 games. The Rangers now have 10 days to release or outright Broussard to the minor leagues.
