McNamee attys. may put private eyes on Rocket

Brian McNamee's lawyers are ready to send private investigators to Roger Clemens' hometown if the defamation suit against their client is not dropped, according to an Internet report last night.

McNamee's lawyers have hired two former New York City cops to dig up potential dirt on Clemens, the New York Times reported on its Web Site. Richard Emery, one of McNamee's lawyers, said Gerry Kane and Stephen Davis, both former NYPD officers, already are working on the case and would travel to Houston if the defamation suit goes forward.

Emery has filed a motion to have the suit dismissed. Clemens filed the lawsuit against his former trainer in January.

"They will be looking at everything," Emery told the newspaper.

McNamee told federal investigators that he injected Clemens with steroids and human growth hormone many times. He repeated those allegations to George Mitchell, making Clemens the most prominent name in his report on steroid use in baseball.

Clemens has vehemently denied the charges and filed the lawsuit against McNamee as part of his effort to clear his name.

The FBI also is investigating Clemens for perjury. He testified before a congressional committee on Feb. 13, again denying ever using steroids or growth hormone. The committee's leadership asked the Department of Justice to launch a perjury probe.

If Emery's investigators turn up evidence that Clemens used steroids, they potentially could turn that over to the federal investigators. brian.costello@nypost.com
